Summary
Renowned Israeli historian Ilan Pappe's groundbreaking book revisits the formation of the State of Israel. Between 1947 and 1949, over 400 Palestinian villages were deliberately destroyed, civilians were massacred, and around a million men, women, and children were expelled from their homes at gunpoint.
Denied for almost six decades, had it happened today it could only have been called "ethnic cleansing." Decisively debunking the myth that the Palestinian population left of their own accord in the course of this war, Ilan Pappe offers impressive archival evidence to demonstrate that, from its very inception, a central plank in Israel's founding ideology was the forcible removal of the indigenous population. This is an indispensable book for anyone interested in the current crisis in the Middle East.

Great book by Ilan Pappe Essential reading for understanding the current situation.
I had my head in my hands listening to this. The cruelty and systematic nature of the cleansing during the Naqba and afterwards by the Israeli state is truly upsetting.

Essential reading
Very well distilled, accessible and powerful account of a very complex issue. It serves as a good entry point into the history of this conflict. A harrowing (but important) narrative.

History repeats again and again
I appreciate the way every sentence is documented, references to archives, names, locations and really detailed information on numbers and facts. It has helped me to have a factual perspective of the current situation. No opinions added, only the display of documented facts.

Eye opening for anyone wanting to cut through the noise
I was recommended this book by a colleague when I wanted to understand the history of this long conflict in Israel and Palestine. Pape is methodical and searing in his analysis. He puts takes forward all narratives from Israeli archives and historians to regional Arab archives to Palestinian academic historians to discuss the different points to view and distill a clear picture of the events of the conception of the state of Israel. It puts much of today’s conflict in clear perspective.
Essential reading for anyone interested in the region and today’s world politics.

The Root of the Conflict
The unfortunate struggle of the Palestinian people, who's rich history had been systematically wiped out, and their people cleansed, both by the killing of and also expulsion of them. The book tells of the events that happened in and around 1948, when European Zionist Jews came to settle on another people's (Palestinian Arab's) land, and how they managed to ethnically cleanse Palestine, village by village, town by town, person by person. It discusses the military plans, as well as actions taken and the influence of the terror groups (Haganah and Stern Gang) who were one of the main players in their ruthless cleansing of an innocent, people, acting as their military. Whether it was their use of flame throwers on some occasions against innocent women and children, poisoning of Palestinian water systems with typhoid on others, or just destruction of villages and housing and placing mines on ruins to prevent people coming back to collect the most basic and essential things, this book talks of the ruthlessness of these settlers when forming their new state, on top of a people who already lived there who had a rich history. I would highly recommend everyone to read/listen to this book, to get an understanding of what is the root cause of the issue in Palestine today.
