About this listen

Step into the fold. It's perfectly safe.

The folks in Mike Erikson's small New England town would say he's just your average, everyday guy. And that's exactly how Mike likes it. Sure, the life he's chosen isn't much of a challenge to someone with his unique gifts, but he's content with his quiet and peaceful existence. That is, until an old friend presents him with an irresistible mystery, one that Mike is uniquely qualified to solve.

Far out in the California desert, a team of DARPA scientists has invented a device they affectionately call the Albuquerque Door. Using a cryptic computer equation and magnetic fields to "fold" dimensions, it shrinks distances so that a traveler can travel hundreds of feet with a single step. The invention promises to make mankind's dreams of teleportation a reality. And, the scientists insist, traveling through the Door is completely safe. Yet evidence is mounting that this miraculous machine isn't quite what it seems - and that its creators are harboring a dangerous secret.

As his investigations draw him deeper into the puzzle, Mike begins to fear there's only one answer that makes sense. And if he's right, it may only be a matter of time before the project destroys... everything. A cunningly inventive mystery featuring a hero worthy of Sherlock Holmes and a terrifying final twist you'll never see coming, The Fold is that rarest of things: a genuinely pause-register science fiction thriller. Step inside its audio and learn why author Peter Clines has already won legions of loyal fans.

Editor reviews

Editors Select, June 2015 - Obligatory lecture: If you love audio, and you have not yet checked out 14, you should. That said, The Fold – which is set within the same universe, but stands on its own – may just as easily make a Peter Clines groupie out of you. This sci-fi mystery follows Mike, a not-so-ordinary high school teacher hired to investigate the scientists behind The Albuquerque Door, a machine that has made teleportation possible. It seems to work fine... but as he digs deeper, Mike soon realizes the scientists are hiding something. It's a signature Clines story, full of puzzles, fun characters, and plenty of weirdness. The cherry on top is 14 narrator Ray Porter, who so perfectly embodies the authors' characters and tone, mastering his unique blend of sarcasm and suspense. —Sam, Audible Editor

Critic reviews

"Narrator Ray Porter deftly captures the emotions of a group of people who are caught up in a force they don't understand.... Porter ably voices a wide range of characters--from the gruff team leader to the foul-mouthed female engineer and the stammering alien leader. Porter is an affable travel guide on this thrilling trip to a frightening world." ( AudioFile)

Brilliant!

I saw on the reviews that a lot of people weren't happy with the ending, but what I found was a great book from start to finish. Different people want different endings, but this one fits the book. Give it a listen and just enjoy it for what it is, a well thought out, and superbly written story. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Great Continuation in the Threshold series

Peter Clines has continued to have me deeply intrigued within the Threshold Universe and the mysteries surrounding it and does a good job of keeping things tied together without focusing too hard on events of the previous book 14.

There isn't much to say for the narration other than Ray Porter is his usual fantastic self.

Brilliant. Exciting. Excellent!

Read 14 first. Otherwise this book seems to go off on a strange tangent. If you’ve read 14 you’ll get it. Loved the story. Loved the characters. Loved the writing style and loved the narrator.
Disappointed that I’ve finished it. I want more!

Even better than 14

14 was great, but it felt like it lacked scale and gravitas considering the concepts involved. Fold explores all of those possibilities and addresses a lot of unanswered questions. It's also a much stronger sci-fi novel than 14 (it was more of a mystery thriller with a sci fi finish), which explains some of the 'disappointed' reviews, but it's exactly what I was looking for.

Great Fun!

This is a little predictable but is still a great romp through secret research projects, good characters and other worlds (of a sort!?). I would recommend this book as it is extremely entertaining.

An Okay Sequel...

Decent read but it would have been nice to have a little bit more story. Maybe the third book is worth taking a look at.
