About this listen

In 1875, Sisi, the Empress of Austria is the woman that every man desires and every woman envies.

Beautiful, athletic and intelligent, Sisi has everything - except happiness. Bored with the stultifying etiquette of the Hapsburg Court and her dutiful but unexciting husband, Franz Joseph, Sisi comes to England to hunt. She comes looking for excitement and she finds it in the dashing form of Captain Bay Middleton, the only man in Europe who can outride her. Ten years younger than her and engaged to the rich and devoted Charlotte, Bay has everything to lose by falling for a woman who can never be his. But Bay and the Empress are as reckless as each other, and their mutual attraction is a force that cannot be denied.

Full of passion and drama, THE FORTUNE HUNTER tells the true story of a nineteenth century Queen of Hearts and a cavalry captain, and the struggle between love and duty.

An easy listen

Well written and excellently narrated by Clare Corbett, this is a an easy, gentle listen.

The pace is steady, having said that, there is not much really in the story to get your teeth into..and I did find myself wishing for the end sooner than it arrived. You do find yourself wishing that the Empress would get her hair cut at various stages of the book...so not so diffiult for the mind to wander!

The story did make me look up the various real life characters 'loosely' represented in the story, so I did learn a few new things, which is always good.

I am not sure if I will listen to another Daisy Goodwin novel, but I will certainly look up for other reads from this narrator, as she did an outstanding job.

Ending let down the book

I enjoyed the book and the reading by Clare Corbett. It was a good illustration of life in a bygone age and of unconventional women - both the heiress and the empress. My only gripe is that the ending seemed contrived with the coincidences that end at the Grand National not sitting well alongside the pace of the book. As the book is loosely based on real people it is a shame it didn't go onto their marriage and the death of the 'hero'. This would have been a better end than leaving the story in Liverpool (Aintree).
