About this listen

A timeless classic of modern-day piracy from the acclaimed master of action and suspense.

Aboard the SS Campari, all is not well.

For Johnny Carter, the Chief Officer, the voyage has already begun badly; but it’s only when the Campari sails that evening, after a succession of delays that he realises something is seriously wrong.

A member of the crew is suddenly missing and the stern-to-stern search only serves to increase tension. Then violence erupts and suddenly the whole ship is in danger. Is the Campari a victim of modern day piracy? And what of the strange cargo hidden below the decks?

Great listen

Enjoyed this - brilliantly involved. Clever. Hero’s physical and mental determination slightly improbable but equal to a Bond movie!😊

Well read

1960s age 14, just finished james Bond series, I borrowed this book and couldnt put it down, I went onto read all of the Alistair Mcleans I could get my hands on,first date with my now husband we sent to see Guns of Navarone but our favorite is Were Eagles Dare, I listened to the narrator of this book before I decided, his voice suited the story and I have been engrossed in it for a couple of nights, really well read and well voiced for the other characters in the story shame hes only narrated 2 books.

Excellent, difficult to stop listening

Even better than when I read it the first time, some 40 years ago! Formidable narration!

Super Story!

Firstly I loved the way Ciaran Saward read the book. I was blown away with the gale and then hurricane literally, held my breath with the search, and truly found myself breathless so many times throughout, I even bored friends trying to persuade them to read it. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed Alistair MacLean's stories.

narrator got very theatrical

I know it's not new but it's a bit too made for movie esk for me.
it was very predictable throughout even with the plot twists didn't inspire me much.
