Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

'I've done my damndest to rip a reader's nerves to rags, I don't want him satisfied.'

Shocking and controversial when it was first published, The Grapes of Wrath is Steinbeck's Pultizer Prize-winning epic of the Joad family, forced to travel west from Dust Bowl-era Oklahoma in search of the promised land of California. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires and powerlessness, yet out of their struggle Steinbeck created a drama that is both intensely human and majestic in its scale and moral vision.

Ahead of it's time.

Love John Steinbeck, love this book.
It's so relevant, especially at the moment work recession, global warming and displaced migrants.
Pure genuis

A hard listen, worth the time. Armitage is great

Audible hopes I enjoyed it! It engaged me, moved me, made me think about how we treat our fellow beings, but enjoyed? Not in my definition of the word. A commentary on the state of humanity told from the perspective of a single farming and migrant family in dust bowl America.
Richard Armitage does a great job of giving each character a distinct voice.

Painful and tragically wonderfully told

A deeply moving book, read beautifully. In the face of despair, those with virtually nothing find ways to help their fellow sufferers. Loved this book.

Outstanding

Evocative account of the Joad family’s destitution and subsequent migration west during the Dust Bowl of the Great Depression. Moving, often disturbing revelations of their journey west, the desperate search for a new life of plenty in California, frequently met with intolerance and exploitation, are what make this classic compulsive reading.
An outstanding portrayal of human displacement, fully brought to life by Richard Armitage’s brilliant narration.

Just the most exquisite writing. I was transfixed from start to end. Not only that, but the narration was something to behold. Extraordinary that people of the world are still existing like this, shameful…

Great but depressing!!

excellent story and narration, I had no idea about the depression. the moral I took is that however bad it gets, someone has it worse! it is very depressing though!!

The grapes of wrath

Fantastic rendition of Steinbeck’s masterpiece.
Thorin Oakenshield’s narration is actually rather bloody good !
A masterclass on the evils of unrestrained Capitalism, rivalling Jack London’s real time exploits in London at the turn of the last century (The people of the abyss) & Tressell’s fictional masterpiece, The ragged trousered philanthropists also set in the early 1900’s.
The poor Joad’s are beset with troubles, completely exacerbated by a corrupt economic system & unscrupulous bankers & cops.
“If you’re in trouble, or hurt or need, go to the poor people. They’re the only ones that’ll help. The only ones”
A classic must (listen) read……

Totally hooked

Beautifully written. Tragic and yet hopeful. A relevant topic, even now, with people on the move to try and find a better life. The narration really helped to make it one of the best books I have read/listened to.

Heart Wrenching

A brilliant record of its time, Before its time. Deep and sensitive, makes me ashamed to be part of the human race.
Often painful to hear, but worthwhile listening, I was gripped throughout.
