About this listen

The Hopwicke Country House Hotel, owned by Jude's glamorous friend Suzy Longthorne, is to host an event for the all-male society the Pillars of Sussex. On the night, Jude helps Suzy serve dinner, and in the early hours of the morning they watch with relief as the guests drag themselves to their beds.

The next morning, one young solicitor does not come down for breakfast. Jude heads for Nigel Ackford's room, presuming he is feeling the effects of the night before. It soon becomes apparent, however, that Nigel has been spared his hangover, for Jude finds him hanging from the beams of his four-poster bed. And she is convinced that this is not suicide....

Enjoyable

Another enjoyable story featuring the adventures of Carole & Jude. A mystery interspersed with a little humour; was it really suicide or did somebody commit murder in the hotel?

Another success!

Very enjoyable addition to the Jude and Carol books. They are both becoming more 3D characters with each book. I just love the interplay between them. Good story, just gripping enough without being too demanding for a night-time listen and plenty of tongue in cheek humour. Great!

Cosy murder mystery

I stumbled on these as I love the Charles Paris mysteries. It's great that they are a series and perfect as audio stories before bedtime or on a rainy afternoon. I particularly like that the characters are middle aged women and more rounded characters than the usual stereotypes. The stories are complete in themselves but added interest comes from additional revelations about the main protagonists' histories. Simon Brett conveys the characters so well in his reading.

Great cosy crime

Great cosy crime, extremely well narrated and believable characters.
My one criticism would be the author overused the term ‘women folk’. If it was used once it must have been used one hundred times and it became mildly annoying!! But not enough to ruin the story thankfully

Excellent

Excellent mystery and clever satire. The plot is quite complex, very believable and the truth is not revealed until the very end. I love how the characters of Jude and Carol develop and reveal ever more of their personalities.

Another fantastic story from Simon Brett

I really like Simon Brett's writing and performance, but I'm not going to lie the story I had conjured up in my head was actually more interesting in where I thought the story was going to go. Don't get me wrong the ending was good, but for me I felt it wasn't as exciting as what I had thought up. This could have something to do with me listening to over 200 murder mystery books over the last 2 years. I now think of scenarios that are either more darker/sinister or abstract in that I thought of something that involved human trafficking/modern slavery and money laundering with the Pop show and hotel as the front. Thus the no staff at the hotel, but their books would show many young girls. But alas that wasn't what happened. I had the whole thing in my head. With the Pillars of the Community as the heads. I was watching Gangs of London at the weekend too which made me think of it.
