Summary

Hoping for a fresh start and undeterred by their dwindling bank account, Jeffery and Sarah Simpson pour the remaining of their savings into a foreclosed bed-and-breakfast in the idyllic, snowy mountain town of Roslyn. But as renovations begin, the married couple discovers more than just a few leaky pipes. The home's reputation stained by a horrific murder from years prior, the Simpsons uncover secrets certain townsfolk have worked tirelessly to keep hidden. Fighting bankruptcy, dark forces, and at times each other, Jeffrey and Sarah fear their dream bed-and-breakfast has become a nightmare.

Hauntingly fun

This is the first book by this author that I have read or listened to and to be honest I wasn't sure what to expect but I actually enjoyed it. I don't like horror or scary movies but I do love a good mystery and the blurb sounded interesting enough to catch my attention. The story starts with the murder of a family and then is told by either of the two main characters, Jeff or Sarah. I liked the fact that they brought it to do up and sell, unlike most mysteries where it is usually an inheritance. Despite not having many suspects the mystery side to the story is interesting and although slow to get going does work nicely into the story and the author does manage to throw in a few surpises. The main focus is of course the house, the murders and the ghosts found there which was a lot of fun, think hide and seek with children rather than scary jumping out of cupboards fright. After listening to this book I would certainly give the rest of the series some consideration.
Jeff and Sarah are running out of money and looking for a new project to start, when a friendly bartender tells Sarah about an article in the news paper about a B&B that is up for sale. The previous owners were all killed in a home invasion and it has been left vacant ever since. Despite the history and the work needed doing, they can see the potential and buy it. The home comes with its very own handyman and despite him being a bit odd Jeff doesn't have the heart to fire him. But the handyman isn't the only strange thing about the house and the more they work on it, the more they uncover. Why was a whole family wiped out in one night? And if the killer was never caught can Jeff and Sarah be sure they are safe? It seems the small sleepy town has a few secrets of it own and when Jeff gets arrested for murder it's up to Sarah to uncover them all.
I liked the narrator. She has a really nice voice and uses it well to give each of the different characters there own voice.
