Summary
Now a major ITV series, The Long Call, adapted for television by screenwriter Kelly Jones and starring Ben Aldridge.
The number one Sunday Times best-selling series featuring Detective Matthew Venn, from author and creator of the Vera and Shetland series, Ann Cleeves.
North Devon is enjoying a rare hot summer with tourists flocking to its coastline. Detective Matthew Venn is called out to a rural crime scene at the home of a group of artists. What he finds is an elaborately staged murder–Dr Nigel Yeo has been fatally stabbed. His daughter, Eve, is a glassblower, and the murder weapon is a shard of one of her broken vases.
Dr Yeo seems an unlikely murder victim. He’s a good man, a public servant, beloved by his daughter. Matthew is unnerved, though, to find that she is a close friend of Jonathan, his husband.
Then another body is found–killed in a similar way. Matthew finds himself treading carefully through the lies that fester at the heart of his community and a case that is dangerously close to home....
The Heron's Cry is the second novel in Ann Cleeves’ Two Rivers crime series, following her Sunday Times best seller The Long Call.
Critic reviews
"Jack Holden demonstrates his full talents in this mystery, bringing the extensive cast of characters in this small and close-knit community in Devon to life with his strong narration. This is particularly apparent as he seamlessly moves between a variety of British regional accents in many of the dialogue scenes. Holden's characterisations of both the male and female characters are strong and he creates a likeable and believable pair in the DI and his husband. His spot-on timing helps keep the story moving towards its surprising end, resulting in a thoroughly enjoyable listen." (AudioFile)
"Matthew Venn is a keeper...stunning." (David Baldacci)

Good Story, Narrator spoils it though :-(
Great story as always, but the narrator sounded bored throughout… disappointing :-(. I found it a struggle to listen to him…

Great book even better than the first
Loved it. Set in an area I know well. It was nice not to guess who did the dastardly deeds. Recommended

Brilliant and gripping
I loved the first book of this series and Pre-ordered this one.
My normal listening pattern for an audible book is 30 mins walk to work and back each day. But this one I’ve listened to Omer just 3 days.
Plot twists galore- takes you down one theory, so you’re convinced you know what’s coming next, only to be overtaken by a different plot. Brilliant until the end. Can’t wait for book 3

Superb follow up
Another super read from this talented author. It was great to be back in the company of Matthew Venn et al and I enjoyed the twists and turns of the storyline too. This author never disappoints!

The Heron’s Cry
As always Anne Cleeves delivers a competent, well written detective story. I liked the West Country setting and found the new characters interesting. I kept wanting to continue with the book which is always a good sign.

Read in a day
I’ve read both books in this series since Monday, having borrowed the first instalment from the library. Had tried to read the Long Call previously and couldn’t get into it, however this time I’ve raced through them. Well plotted, getting used to the team, surprisingly little swearing but effective when it happens. All in all a darned good read, both of which I’d recommend!

Really worthwhile listening to this
Listening to this for a second time, as first one rushes through to hear the story, the action, but a second listen means one hears the nuances of the characters and the description of Devon. These characters grow on one and it’s not so long to wait for the n3xt one!
