Summary
The gripping tragi-comedy of a bungled kidnapping in a provincial Argentinean town tells the story of Charley Fortnum, the 'Honorary Consul', a whisky-sodden figure of dubious authority, who is taken by a group of revolutionaries.
As Eduardo Plarr, a local doctor, negotiates with revolutionaries and authorities for Fortnum's release, the corruption of both becomes evident.

Wonderfully paced story
Perhaps this story delves a but deeply for some but definitely not me.
Greene’s yarn takes place in another less well known place and he manages to inform the reader (listener) rather than ’teach’ about how perceptions and life experiences can vary so wildly. How we can get caught up in an understandably narrow view if for no other reason than for survival.
The story takes time to investigate how it is to be young, old, live with loneliness, hope, sadness and despair.
The narrator takes us on a guided journey giving each character a distinctive depth of understanding. No one is left behind. His dedication to making the narrative as real as possible without hamming it up delivers characters, not caricatures.
All round 5* performance and story.

Fantastic novel but…
The Honorary Consul is a terrific novel which contains the usual colourful cast of characters we expect from Graham Green, and a storyline full of twists and turns and soaked in the atmosphere of the country. It also contains probably the most comprehensive discussion of Greene’s personal views on religion and politics. It is only marred by TPS’s comical South American accent, which eventually became so unendurable that I gave up listening and bought a paperback copy in order to finish it.

Unexpected treasure.
Unique haunting tender and thoroughly beautiful. Masculine written love / loss / British temperament / self exile / aloneness / content art that calms a storm gently.

Wonderful story and performance
Tim Piggott-Smith’s reading is tremendous: the characters are well-defined, really believable and come alive in his narration.

Beautifully read
So good to hear a professional actor reading this – the quality shines through and the performance is first rate.
Also, I had forgotten how very good Graham Greene can be. An excellent pairing of author and narrator. Thank you!

Love, God, Sex & Death
Another wonderful Greene tussling with all of the above, exquisitely read yet again with heartbreaking tenderness by TPS.

Moving and Perceptive
A moving and perceptive story, beautifully read by Tim Piggott-Smith, who brings Graham Greene's writing perfectly to life. Graham Greene's ability to make us unexpectedly come to understand and empathise with his diverse range of characters is deeply moving.
