Summary
Waterstones Scottish Book of the Year 2018
A captivating story of a crumbling estate in the wilds of Scotland, its century-old secret and an enduring mystery....
Following the death of her last living relative, Hetty Deveraux leaves London and her strained relationship behind for Muirlan, her ancestral home in Scotland - now in ruins. As Hetty dives headfirst into the repairs, she discovers a shocking secret protected by the house for a hundred years.
With only whispered rumours circulating among the local villagers and a handful of leads to guide her, Hetty finds the power of the past is still affecting her present in startling ways.

Compelling
I thoroughly enjoyed this audible book. The narrator really brought the characters to life. The plot is intriguing right to the last chapter. Highly recommended!

Amazing
Just beautifully narrated and the story is wonderful with a warmth and sadness and so very typical of time and place also with a Scottish stoic overtone
I absolutely loved it ….

Wonderfully descriptive of Hebridean coast.
You felt you were there, however the characters I found uninspiring. None captured my attention, none I cared much for - least so the protagonist, Libby. Much female dithering amongst male power. (Apart from one bad/strong/obvious and fleeting female character). Frankly, I wished to kick Libby, oft. Without the landscape detail, I would not have finished. Hate to be mean but glad when it ended. 🙈

My favourite novel ever!
The characters are engaging. The setting is so atmospheric. The weaving of the storyline is so heartwarming. Depth, detail, psychological insight and a sheer joy.

Good story but confusing!
Too many people with the same and similar names made the story somewhat confusing. Mention at the end of a Jane Cameron but then no more explanation though you can guess who she was. Would have been nice to have the whole family tree explained in the end because again, I was confused as to who was who. Also the epilogue failed to play!

slow and tedious
a great idea for a story line, but sadly fell very short of my expectations. saw it out to the end, but it only got worse.
