Summary

I cast my eyes over the impressive meal I’ve cooked and the half-empty crystal wine glasses. As our guests smile graciously, I squeeze my husband’s shoulder. It’s vital I get his friends to like me. To believe this version of me. Because I’ll do anything to stop them learning the truth…

Ever since I met my handsome husband Dr Gabe Bonneville, I started playing the role of the perfect housewife. He works hard as a surgeon, so I look after our home, and throw elaborate dinner parties with champagne cocktails for his best friends Hugh and Anita. He’s my safe place and my chance to have the family I’ve always wanted.

I’ve managed to hide the mornings when I wake up and see a face in the shadows. I haven’t told Gabe the truth about the woman who raised me, or told him about the therapy I’ve been getting so my secrets stay hidden in the dark. I haven’t questioned his past so he doesn’t ask about mine. I see the way Anita looks at him sometimes, but I’ll never say a word.

Until the letter arrives at the front door. The beautiful, expensive card shakes in my hand as I read the neat black handwriting.

Someone knows I’m not just a housewife. And the lies I’ve told will be all that’s left when I disappear…

Kept me guessing

Love Detective Dan books. Can't wait for the next one. Hope it's not too long. We need a tv series!

Brilliant story and narration

I found this author by accident and just love her books. They are grippy and always with a twist. The narrator is so good to listen to and just makes me want to keep listening. A perfect pairing.

A fairly good read if you can get on with the narration.

The story was good but the narrator was an odd choice. I felt he wasn't the right one for this book. 2 narrators would have been better. One for each of the main characters. The narrator's Scottish accent was the worst I've ever heard and it was cringe and distracting.

I figured out who the villain was really quickly. Not sure if that's my superpower (I'd prefer it if I could to eat what I want and stay slim, but here we are).

I will try other books from the author as it was fairly well written and I wouldn't write one off based on one book.

The best yet!!!

Having said it's the best yet, that's always how I feel at the end of one of Anna-Lou's books. Please say there are more to come!!! Brilliantly read too. Worth far more than 5 stars!

Such an Emotional rollercoaster

Once again a thoroughly enjoyable book. With so many ups, downs & twists along the way. The excellent James Lailey brought the storyline to life, as he has done in all of Anna-Lou Weatherleys books. Now I have finished book 7 I am going to miss listening to the wonderfully written storylines.

It was brilliant. I had no idea of the outcome or the story.

I couldn't stop listening to the story. I even listened when I should have been working! Thank you, it was fabulous.

Enjoyable if improbable

Excellent narration. Story was well far fetched, but hey, that’s why they call it fiction. An enjoyable yarn with a memorable detective that I would love to hear more of.
