Summary
I'm living in the dream our great-grandparents envisioned for their grandchildren. Long-time Alice, Texas resident, my grandmother Abelina Ybarra Garcia and her niece Jesusa Ramirez Godines escaped the Mexican Revolution and the Cristero War. Grand uncle David Ramirez sacrificed his life for the safety of his sister and niece, Abelina and Jesusa, at the end of a 500-mile journey on foot from Ocampo Guanajuato, Mexico. My elderly uncles recall a great love story on how Genaro met Martina Lopez from Seguin, Texas.
Born in Tynan, Texas, Genaro Adames grew up in a family of sharecroppers. Genaro's mother and father, Encarnacion and Tioudela, grew up in an impoverished community near Monterey, Mexico. They sought prosperity in the fields of South Texas. Genaro worked for Otto Schmidt on his dairy farm in Alice. A self-taught auto mechanic, Genaro built his auto repair shop in Alice and lifted his family from poverty. The garage Genaro Adames built with his bare hands still stands as a landmark of his journey to Alice, Texas.
