The no.1 New York Times bestseller

Now a major TV series Starring Jennifer Garner

It was the last thing he told me: protect her

Before Owen Michaels disappears, he manages to smuggle a note to his new wife, Hannah: protect her. Hannah knows exactly who Owen needs her to protect - his teenage daughter, Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. And who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.

As her desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, his boss is arrested for fraud and the police start questioning her, Hannah realises that her husband isn't who he said he was. And that Bailey might hold the key to discovering Owen's true identity, and why he disappeared. Together they set out to discover the truth. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen's past, they soon realise that their lives will never be the same again...

A beautiful and thrilling mystery, perfect for readers of Liane Moriarty and Celeste Ng.

Waiting for the twist

Well written and interesting but just quite predictable. I didn’t really get why the main character had the skills to solve a mystery like this, or why she needed to. Plus terrible ending

Not bad for a short easy listening novel

This was a decent story, relatively short and average for easy listening. Definitely keeps your attention. The audiobook performance is very heavy and breathy voice - all the time - so gets a little annoying. Overall, an average listen and nothing unpleasant.

Long winded, drawling, repetitive and tiring

I wish I could be kinder, but really this was a waste of my time. Constantly repeated phrases ‘what are you talking about’ ‘he says’ ‘I said’ pad out this story that hardly has any true excitement or thrills. The ending was ok, as good as it could be I suppose, however the motives of the characters were sketchy and not satisfactory. A complex puzzle certainly, very much US centric of course. Hannah, the wood turner, is a realist challenged by the initially unexplainable disappearances her husband who she thought she knew. A man called Nicholas Ball is introduced as a Bad Man but comes across as caring and loving. A Texas Marshal knows what’s best but does he? So many people to register. Bailey is the best and ultimately likeable… you may like it more than I did.

He says.. she says..

Good story but the amount of times the phrases he says or she says etc are used is incredibly annoying

How refreshing to have a story focus on a not so wicked stepmother

As I was curious about this novel as it’s been so popular in the US, and so even though the blurb didn’t particularly appeal, decided to give a go. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and not for the reasons I expected at all. It’s a fast paced thriller with a mystery driving the narrative, but actually what I loved was its heart. In particular the portrayal of the teenager Bailey and the protagonist, and their gradual coming together. I have two stepparents - or had, I should say - my stepfather passed away a decade ago, and now I have a stepson. It’s a relationship too rarely written about given how common blended families are. We are still left with the ‘wicked stepmother’ of fairy tales, and I wonder if it’s this relationship, dealt with so deftly and emotively, is a reason it’s struck a chord. I gather it’s been picked up by Reese Witherspoon and Julia Roberts and the latter will be perfect as Hannah.

Gripping. Loved it.

An interesting and unusual story, kept me thoroughly entertained from start to finish. Loved the main character and ultimately felt so much of it was a love story. Of strength and family and not giving up on the people you love. Great listen.

Brilliant thriller

Thought this book was brilliant and not not at all predictable in its storyline. Perfect holiday listening.
