About this listen

The remarkable new Sunday Times bestselling novel from the author of the international sensation The Midnight Library

‘A beautiful novel full of life-affirming wonder and imagination' BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH

'What looks like magic is simply a part of life we don’t understand yet . . .'

When retired Maths teacher Grace Winters is left a run-down house on a Mediterranean island by a long-lost friend, curiosity gets the better of her. She arrives in Ibiza with a one-way ticket, no guidebook and no plan.

Among the rugged hills and golden beaches of the Balearics Grace searches for answers about her friend’s life, and how it ended. What she uncovers is stranger than she could have dreamed. But to dive into this impossible truth, Grace must first come to terms with her past.

Filled with wonder and wild adventure, this is a story of hope and the life-changing power of a new beginning.©2024 Matt Haig (P)2024 Canongate Books Ltd

A book of two halves.

This started so well and I was totally absorbed but then within a few days of Grace landing in Ibiza and I was bored. The story just kept veering off on a ramble about something or other…I can’t even remember what but it felt like a PowerPoint slide of info was slotted in every few paragraphs.
Such a shame. I love Matt Haig books usually. Not this one.

Interesting story, slightly marred by delivery

Found the story engaging and I think if I had read it as a book I would have been gripped. However, although I am a great fan of Joanna Lumley, I haven’t heard her read an audio book before. For me her rather breathy delivery spoiled the story - I was unable to be carried along by the narrative and found myself just wanting it to be over…Some of the voices worked, but found the choice of voice for Art (the baddy) to be too much of a caricature - all I could think of was the artful dodger!

Soothingly hopeful

Really enjoyed the story, the setting and the beautiful narration- though I did wonder would how likely it was a maths teacher from Lincoln would sound like Joanna Lumley. The weaving in of mathematical theory, magic, music, afterlife and other worlds, set against ordinary Ibizans protecting their natural environment from destructive development, made for a full and interesting tale. It did descend slightly into a caper at one point… but still hugely enjoyable and thought provoking with important messages.

A nice holiday read

This is a great option for your next easy holiday read. The characters were relatable, and I particularly enjoyed the vivid descriptions of Ibiza, which added a nice touch to the story.

The voice performance was commendable, bringing the characters to life and making the listening experience pleasant. However, I felt that it was a little slow-paced at times, which made it a bit challenging to stay fully engaged throughout.

Overall, a decent read, especially if you're looking for something light and reflective. It may not be Haig's best work, I found it didn’t quite measure up to some of his other books, but it still offers a heartfelt journey with relatable characters and a beautiful setting.

Great story about the beuty of life and of our planet. And yes, there are aliens, but the story is about way more than that.

Joanna Lumley’s voice is so good

I have read Matt Haig before and loved it. This is even better read by Lumley with all the voices with accents of all the characters, bringing them to life.

Good Story

I enjoyed it but not as good as midnight library. Enjoyed the story of this book and getting to know the different character’s. Joanna Lumley is a good reader.

Just brilliant

Great story and I loved Joanna Lumley’s narration. I don’t listen to much fiction, but I am glad I chose this as my casual foray into the genre.
