Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The best-selling author of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility and master of absorbing, sophisticated fiction returns with a stylish and propulsive novel set in 1950s America.

In June, 1954, 18-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served 15 months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett's future, one that will take them all on a fateful journey in the opposite direction - to the city of New York.

Spanning just 10 days and told from multiple points of view, Towles' third novel will satisfy fans of his multi-layered literary styling while providing them an array of new and richly imagined settings, characters and themes.

Masterpiece

I loved this book. I didn’t expect to, it’s a sort of “road” book. And mostly male characters.

But, the characters are so well written and it’s incredibly easy to listen to. It’s so beautiful I listened to quite a few of the passages more than once.

Really enjoyed listening to all the characters tell their stories…..well written and intriguing….some very funny lines….some sadness.
Stick with it…it’s worth it.

It took me a bit to get into it, especially with all the different names… but then, WOW! Very entertaining , wonderful narrating.

Gripping story

I loved the story and especially the protagonist ! Each character with their own stories, personalities and views of the world.

A slow burner but becomes a wee classic.

I loved Towles' earlier books - especially The Gentleman in Moscow, so downloaded this as soon as possible. However, at first I was very disappointed - it seemed slow and repetitive and a "boys own road trip" but the reader was so good and the language so beautiful, I was soon sucked in. The characters are so rich and we move along through their individual stories of the same event. I will buy the paperback when it comes out and enjoy the journey once more.

Fabulous

Great story brilliantly written and performed. Towles is such a gifted but gentle writer. I like that the real protagonist is often a child.
