Summary

Former Chief Inspector of Homicide, Armand Gamache, has found a peace he'd never imagined possible, away from the front line of the police and in the tranquil village of Three Pines. But when his friend Clara Morrow asks for help, he can't bring himself to refuse her, despite the old wounds it threatens to re-open. Clara's husband, Peter, is missing, having failed to come home on the first anniversary of their separation, as promised.

As Gamache journeys further into Quebec, he is drawn deeper into the tortured mind of Peter Morrow, a man so desperate to recapture his fame as an artist that he would sell his soul. As Gamache gets closer to the truth, he uncovers a deadly trail of jealousy and deceit. Can Gamache bring Peter, and himself, home safely? Or in searching for answers, has he placed himself, and those closest to him, in terrible danger . . .

From number one New York Times best-selling author, Louise Penny, comes an evocative, immersive novel brimming with atmosphere and heart-stopping suspense - her most ingenious novel to date.

Wow! what a ride!

Penny has done it again, I found myself lost in thought and in emotional turmoil as her story developed and spun, weaving and entangling me into the characters. I am totally hooked on the series.

Slightly disappointed

After the rollercoaster of book 10 I found this a little thin and unconvincing. Still managed to listen and I love the world Louise Penny has created but I found this one the weakest of all of them I’ve read (1-10)

Not my favourite

This story took too long to get to the interesting bits. However I enjoyed it just the same and I think the narrator is brilliant. Not my favourite Gamache book but still worth listening to.

Not her best story but a satisfying finish

What did you like most about The Long Way Home?

Gamache is always my favourite part of any of Penny's stories. I also liked that in this they travelled out of Three Pines, was starting to get a bit tired of that place.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Gamache

What about Adam Sims’s performance did you like?

Adam Sims brings this book to life! His narration made this story that much more enjoyable. And he is very good at the English and French accents.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not necessarily but yes it is compelling.

I will listen to anything Adam Sims narrates!

Inspector Gamache is at it again! I felt this story dragged a bit compared to all the others but it was still a compelling book, as always!

Great listen!

Another enjoyable, character filled book from Louise Penny. Brilliantly read - didn’t want it to come to and end in such a way.

A Delight!

This is a beautifully written book. It was over far too soon and I'm feeling bereft. I find it hard to understand those who think this wasn't as good as the previous books. I really hope there will be more instalments from Three Pines.

Hmmm

Didn’t love it! First time in this series. It just didn’t feel like the same series and it didn’t help that I personally dislike the character at the centre of the storyline. There was no tension, much of it just seemed a little silly to be honest. And it certainly didn’t live up to the book summary. I hope this isn’t a change in direction as I’ve already bought the remaining books!

finale

Would you consider the audio edition of The Long Way Home to be better than the print version?

I enjoyed the audio- the accents and pronunciation of names and places is lovely and brings it to life

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ruth, can't ever figure her out and wouldn't we all like to be able to be truly ourselves

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Clara and Myra in their cabin. I wanted to be there

Any additional comments?

I think much better to listen to these stories in order. This rounded off threads from other books and moved me to tears towards the end.

Absorbing

An absorbing ending to a 10 volume story of delightful people facing extraordinary events in an enchanting landscape.

I am delighted to have found this series which at times had me laughing out loud and at other times weeping silently.

You cannot read/listen to these books and not be touched by the characters and their reactions to each other and their surroundings.
