Gruesome

Another cracking book but definitely gruesome.
Enjoyable story but something seems to be missing in this book and not sure what it is.
David Monteath is excellent.

Good story but not for the squeamish

Great storyline, good narrator. good depth in characters but quite gruesome at times. so be warned if squeamish.

Another gripping story

T F Muir definitely knows how to write a gripping story which keeps up a good pace and this is no exception. Although I have some criticisms, I am getting through this series very quickly as they are such easy listens which pull you in.

I have marked it down a bit as it feels like he's pushing the nastiness levels more with each book purely to shock. Also as a female reader I can't relate to any of the female characters who seem to be either brash in extreme, or cold and aloof. Though, nonetheless, I do quite enjoy Jessie who provides the comedy moments and shows a warmth in her relationship with her son. Overall though, Muir does not seem too keen on women if his characters are anything to go by!

A Good Listen

I really like the main protagonist and this series of stories, but Gilchrist does sometimes do some bafflingly stupid things (for an intelligent person). Also, I gave the author the benefit of the doubt in the earlier novels, but I get the impression that he either doesn't understand women, or doesn't like them much, as all but two recurring characters in his novels are grouchy, indecisive, insensitive or plain stupid! All that being said, I really enjoy David Monteath's narration. Many an audio-book has been ruined by a poor choice of narrator!

"We need another book Mr Muir"

Clearly Mr Muir's publisher has been chasing him for a new book, or the mortgage is due. Ok, no original ideas so lets fall back on "serial killer", that usually moves the books off the shelves. Couple it with this some nice gory and brutal deaths and that should satisfy. A great shame because Mr Muir is a good writer and his characters are well constructed and interesting. Sadly this is a half book, with some good ideas, solid writing and a fine reading. The "story" is completed with over two hours to go and so we get two hours of "chase" before we finally arrive at the turgid end. I have listened to several Gilchrist books previously and have enjoyed them and will give Mr Muir another chance but . . . .another "serial killer" and "gore" substituting for solid plot and I'm afraid that will be the last.

Wish there were more in the series

A gripping, engaging and easy to read/listen series.

Narrator suits the characters.

Reminded me of visit to the quaint town of Saint Andrews.

Love the down to earth and tough investigators character.

Jessie, loved the wild spontaneous gritty remarks and her bucking of the status quo. Fantastic character.

After a few duff down loads I am restored by an exciting listen. Am in very critical mode as laid low with back injury. Only thing keeping me sane is Audible!

disappointing

Started off well. good story despite the dislike for one of the characters Jessie
then it became predictable and tedious which was a shame as had real potential

I think this author dislikes women

Is there anything you would change about this book?

yes the characters of many of the women.

This is the fourth book in the series I have listened to in a short space of time, evidence that I like the stories. However, I am writing this review only 3 hours into the book as the female characters are really getting on my nerves, to the extent I may not finish the book. I had picked up on the fact the lead, andy gilchrist, had nasty women in his life in the previous books, but put it down to the fact you were supposed to have sympathy for him. However,, it's got to the stage of the ridiculous now. These are just the ones I can remember:
Ex wife - cheated on him, left him and hated him.
Daughter - spoilt brat, took mother's side and now reconciled but sulks and puts phone down to get her own way. And she is an adult.
Colleague whose name I can't recall - short relationship before she dumped him. Ended up not speaking and applying for transfer elsewhere ending on bad terms.
Cooper - married lover cheating on her husband. Treats him as some sort of male escort. Sex at her convenience.
Jessie - side kick. Very rude, aggressive and seems to suffer from Permanent PMT. Is supposed to be junior to gilchrist but treats him with no respect and orders him about like a pet dog.
Logan - this is the one who acted as the straw who broke the camels back for me. Accused him of sexual assault without reason. Meet up again in the course of a case and she is rude, arrogant and aggressive despite this being a professional meeting, him being her superior and being in the precedes of her own boss.

With the exception of one other policeman in the earlier books, none of the regular male characters are this awful. Evidently the author has only ever met haridens in the course of his life, perhaps it's him I should feel sorry for.Now I have ranted I will leave the book a few days before going back to it in the hope it is a temporary irritation. However, regrettably I think this ends my relationship with this author.
