About this listen

The new Hercule Poirot novel – another brilliant murder mystery that can only be solved by the eponymous Belgian detective and his ‘little grey cells’.

Since the publication of her first book in 1920, Agatha Christie wrote 33 novels, two plays and more than 50 short stories featuring Hercule Poirot. Now, for the first time ever, the guardians of her legacy have approved a brand new novel featuring Dame Agatha's most beloved creation.

Hercule Poirot's quiet supper in a London coffee house is interrupted when a young woman confides to him that she is about to be murdered. She is terrified, but begs Poirot not to find and punish her killer. Once she is dead, she insists, justice will have been done.

Later that night, Poirot learns that three guests at the fashionable Bloxham Hotel have been murdered, a cufflink placed in each one’s mouth. Could there be a connection with the frightened woman? While Poirot struggles to put together the bizarre pieces of the puzzle, the murderer prepares another hotel bedroom for a fourth victim…

In the hands of internationally bestselling author Sophie Hannah, Poirot plunges into a mystery set in 1920s London – a diabolically clever puzzle that can only be solved by the talented Belgian detective and his ‘little grey cells’.

Critic reviews

"Sophie's idea for a plot line was so compelling and her passion for my grandmother's work so strong, that we felt that the time was right for a new Christie to be written." (Mathew Prichard, Chairman of Agatha Christie Limited and grandson of Agatha Christie)
"We Agatha Christie fans read her stories - and particularly her Poirot novels - because the mysteries are invariably equal parts charming and ingenious, dark and quirky and utterly engaging. Sophie Hannah had a massive challenge in reviving the beloved Poirot, and she met it with heart and no small amount of little gray cells. I was thrilled to see the Belgian detective in such very, very good hands. Reading The Monogram Murders was like returning to a favorite room of a long-lost home." (Gillian Flynn)

More plot than you shake a stick at....

This is jam packed with plot, twists, turns, red herrings etc. The reading of it (listening) is highly enjoyable. Whilst going through the book for the first time and not knowing the story, it is delightful the pace of gradual unfolding of clues and hints, really gripping. I read it within 3 days and I've only subscribed for the one-a-month contract - oops! However once I had finished, I was a little dissatisfied with the actual denouement. I didn't believe in the motives for what was done, from any of the characters, people acting outside of what is the norm within real life. And Poirot somehow had figured everything out with very little assistance from real clues - is he now telepathic?

I think Sophie Hannah does a clever thing by narrating the book from a new detectives point of view. You get a good glimpse at Poirot but with the flavour of the other characters personality. There is sufficient of the well-known Poirot foibles such as cleanliness and fastidiousness and self-adoration to make him familiar.

The narration is fabulous, Julian Rhind-Tutt reads just like he is the person telling you the story in the first person, and somehow manages to recreate the Poirot voice that David Suchet made famous. 10/10 for narrator, would listen to something read by him again just to hear the nice voice!

enjoyable but as an avid fan of Poirot probably expected too much, such a shame

Disappointing

I love the character of Hercule Poirot but Ms Hannah, perhaps understandably, doesn't have the same relationship with the detective as Agatha Christie had. This meant that the Poirot who emerged from the pages of this book was a different Poirot than the one I have come to know and love.

The concept was good but the execution was sadly lacking. Some of the conclusions drawn by Poirot were not wholly believable from the evidence provided in the text and the reveal took more than 3 hours!!!

Julian Rhind-Tutt has a fabulous voice when he is acting but as he tried valiantly to put interest into each character his voice dwindled to such a level that I couldn't hear what he was saying.

I hope as this project progresses and more novels are written about our favourite Belgian detective, the author will develop a relationship with the character that will enrich our mutual experience. However I am reluctant to spend any more money on books by this author.

I love Poirot so it is fantastic to be able to read new stories.

She has got his character, just right.

All his annoying habits, and mannerisms are there just like Agatha created. The plot line is great and there are several twists which keep you guessing right to the end.I love the way it is done by writing a letter setting out everything that happened just like in the murder of Roger Ackroyd.

Good old Poirot

This was a good listen. An interesting plot and an engaging performance. I have not read or listened to any other attempts to recreate Poirot and I am glad that I took the chance on this one.

Not the real thing

It began well….but became a tortuous mess of twists and switch-backs - more of a parody than an homage to Agatha Christie.

There’s probably a decent story in there somewhere…

Good points: JRT did a very decent job of narrating the story.
It started off pretty well with 3 bodies in a hotel.
Fee, the waitress in the cafe was a good character.

Bad points: far too long! The winding up took 3hrs.
Very repetitive and long winded in places.
Quite plodding and very dialogue based - no sense of the time or the place in which it was set.
Catchpole is a morose idiot - leaves bodies in a hotel overnight, ignores the most obvious points etc - how did he get to his current station?
Also, the explanation was too contrived - ok, suspension of disbelief but this was so twisted and minutely explained I was praying for it to end.
Sorry. I really wanted to like it as I love Golden Age fiction but not for me.
