In The Other Animals, a worm goes through a breakup, a vulture contemplates the act of killing, a whale falls in love with a song, and more.
This funny, moving collection of eight stories - written by a diverse crew of scientists, literary writers, and comics, and informed by science - explores what animal perspectives can show humans about the world we all share. It includes stories by Daniel Mallory Ortberg ('Texts from Jane Eyre'), R. Eric Thomas ('Elle'), Ken Liu ('The Paper Menagerie'), Lulu Miller ('Invisibilia'), Kelly Weinersmith ('Soonish'), Shruti Swamy ('O'Henry Award Winner'), Max McClure ('Grist'), and Kaeli Swift ('Audubon').

Unexpected Masterpiece?
Originally, I only gave this collection of books any form of attention because they were free and I had a while to wait before my next credit.
Now, having listened to each one, I cannot recommend them enough.
Although some, such as the book based on elephants, weren't as capturing as the rest; I haven't a single regret.
Each was interesting and entertaining.
I have to give special appreciation to the book 2 and book 9 as they really struck a chord with me.
Everyone should experience these audiobooks.

Intriguing tales!
Great concept - viewing the world from the perspective of the every day creatures we share it with. The crow was my favourite as it made me think how human actions are perceived by other intelligent species. The marmot addressed ageing, the scorpion was habitat and beliefs, the snail/flatworm addressed relationships/friendships and ambition. Lots more beside these.
A little bit of paper rustling in the background but overall well read and enjoyable. I just wish that the whole audio file could be downloaded as one and not individual tales one at a time. I bake for a living and also listen in headphones when gardening. Both of which mean mega sticky or filthy hands so I can’t keep downloading each part!

for henrietta (who would have loved this)
I have always had a fondness and love for animals that are most unloved by humans. fantastically written and narrated. well worth your time.
btw Henrietta was my childhood friend who happened to be a tarantula.

Umwelt considerations
absolutely mesmerising. Such an interesting and touching collection of stories. Making the animal kingdom understood to the human mind, without too much humanising.
An Incredible listen, only interrupted by the presentation, and conclusion by the audible narrator.

From other to another
I love how much this anthology expands your empathy. Although we can never truly understand what it's like to be an animal, sometimes a little imagination can help us to understand their behaviour rather than defaulting to "it's just their instincts." However, certain stories did seem quite pretentious and hard to follow, trying to make a deep statement and falling flat. Those that were more narrativ or character driven provided far better insights.

lived it. best one was Rectangles and the Snail
Listened with kids, didn't know there were bits about sex. Had to "accidentally" skip those. But everyone really enjoyed the rest
