Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

THE PRISON OFFICER.

CHALLENGES EVERYTHING YOU THOUGHT YOU KNEW ABOUT PEOPLE IN PRISON.

Life as a prison officer was Gen's calling. But when she took her first job in a men’s prison at only 23, she was thrown in at the deep end.

How did she find her place amongst gangsters, killers and traffickers?

How would she navigate a mental health system on its knees?

And how could she help the prisoners when most of the officers were burned out?

From the wing kingpin who delivers his threats with a smile and a pat on the back, to the famous drill artist causing a stir on the wing, and from the ‘frequent flyer' for whom prison is the only home he's known to the young offender who gets a second chance, Gen reveals the incredible cast of characters behind the prison walls.

In this searing account of her time behind bars, discover how Gen learned how to use her heart, her humour and sheer bloody-mindedness to make a difference.

Amazingly written book which provided an incredible insight into life in prison whilst leading you on a journey of laughter, squeamishness, and heartwarming tears to the eyes through Gens narrative and anecdotes. I didn’t want it to end! 10/10 would recommend!!

Eye opening read

Couldn’t put it down - raw and honest perspective, fascinating to hear what life is like behind bars, especially as a female officer

The extraordinary courage, strength and compassion of the author.

Beautifully written, evoking a vivid picture of life in a male prison and how a young woman navigated the daily horrors with wisdom and love. Jen's ability to empathise with men born into a dark hopeless world that rarely offered an opportunity to escape from..especially having come from an alternative life of privilege..I am in awe of her and how she grew with the job and ability to describe it so brilliantly.

Captivating listen

This was one of those reads (listens) that you don't want to stop!

I found it really interesting how the author explored the way the different 'characters' (people) made her feel. It's so easy for us to build up a picture of these people from the other side of the gate, but actually, the feelings that are evoked when you spend more time with them seems to be more nuanced. Hearing these thoughts from the author encouraged me to reflect throughout.

Not for.me

this was like listening to a childs composition for a school project , too simplistic and not an awful lot of basic information about working as a prison officer . Sorry not for me.
