Summary
Shortlisted for the 2019 CWA Gold Dagger Award
Shortlisted for the 2019 Best Crime Novel of the Year in the Amazon Publishing Readers' Awards
A serial killer is burning people alive in the Lake District's prehistoric stone circles. He leaves no clues and the police are helpless. When his name is found carved into the charred remains of the third victim, disgraced detective Washington Poe is brought back from suspension and into an investigation he wants no part of.
Reluctantly partnered with the brilliant, but socially awkward, civilian analyst, Tilly Bradshaw, the mismatched pair uncover a trail that only he is meant to see. The elusive killer has a plan and for some reason Poe is part of it.
As the body count rises, Poe discovers he has far more invested in the case than he could have possibly imagined. And in a shocking finale that will shatter everything he's ever believed about himself, Poe will learn that there are things far worse than being burned alive.
Critic reviews

I liked it.
I listen to audiobooks most days whilst I’m working and I do love a good crime novel/series but I have to say I am becoming bored with the formulaic plots. Maybe I’m desensitised. I enjoyed this book, not because it didn’t follow tried and tested formulas but because the characters were engaging and different and to me somehow it had a slightly retro feel about it, like a Reginald hill book maybe.

Engrossing
Fast paced, but at the same time the story slowly unwinds. It sets the scene , you could almost be shoulder to shoulder with the characters. Finding and piecing the clues each step of the way. One of the most enjoyable books l have listened to in a long time. Intelligent in its writing, have bought the next in the series as l want to know how the characters develop .

Well crafted murder mystery with sprinkles on top
I don’t usually listen to murder mysteries but I was recommended this by a friend. As a retired Cumbria police officer, I have to say the author deffo has inside information. Some of the small background details are spot on, the kinds of things people outside the job are unlikely to know. Loved the story and obviously the genuine knowledge of the county. I am a new fan. Fab. Downloading the rest.
