About this listen

Engaging and fast-paced, this gripping coming-of-age novel of chess, feminism, and addiction speeds to a conclusion as elegant and satisfying as a mate in four.

Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control.

By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Worth listening too even if you've seen the series

Some people have complained about the reader, but I thought she was fine.
I enjoyed the details the author used when describing his scenes.
A great book.

so much better than the series...

...I loved chess as a kid, but this book had me following options of the Sicilian defence on YouTube. it's intense and beautiful in equal measure, definitely worth reading...

Thoroughly enjoyable

Having seen the series, and being a chess lover back in my youth, the series inspired me to get back into it, which I am now doing with a vengeance!

I was pleasantly surprised to find that this audio book is free with Audible membership, but was a little disappointed at some of the reviews, particularly regarding the narrator. I have to say that I had no problem with the narrator at all. Some of her male voices are a little weird but didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book at all. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

I don't play chess, but I enjoyed

There were a lot of interlocking storyline going on but it all came back to the young lady with a hidden ability to play chess.

Fabulous

I find this book to be the perfect audio book. The story is sublime and the performance simply enhances it. I've been spellbound by the story and mesmerised by the reading of it.

I'd seen the Netflix series and imagined that the audio book would be something of a repetition. It is not. They make each other. They should be read and viewed as one.

I shall miss Beth Harmon.

Great story

If you can play chess it will be more relevant but not essential. I did not like the narrator’s attempts at male voices but other than that it was very enjoyable 😊

Brilliant

Chess lovers, like myself, will love this and swallow it whole! The book is beautifully narrated and descriptive enough to track moves and chess notation. An excellent read.

Engrossing

Having watched the Netflix adaptation, i was keen to read the book, it didn’t disappoint, whilst the show made some subtle changes, the book still made me feel like I was in the room whilst the matches were in action.

Initially the narration seemed a little robotic, however, after a short while, Amy got into her stride and it just flowed.

Would recommend.
