Composed of over 60 percent water itself, a human body isn't naturally buoyant. It will float only for as long as there is air in its lungs before gradually sinking to the bottom as the air seeps out. It's thought the remains are those of Leo Villiers, the son of a prominent businessman who vanished weeks ago. To complicate matters, it was rumoured that Villiers was having an affair with a local woman. And she, too, is missing.
But Hunter has his doubts about the identity. He knows the condition of the unrecognizable body could hide a multitude of sins. Then more remains are discovered - and these remote wetlands begin to give up their secrets….

Yet again another good book and audiobook by Simon Beckett. Good narration and a story that keeps you hooked to the end.

An engaging and well-researched thriller
I really enjoyed this and will purchase other books in the series in due course. The technical details appear to be very soundly researched and the first-person narrator has a very plausible combination of strengths and weaknesses, including what struck me as him possibly being depressed. I really enjoyed all the minor observational details, like people's hair being blown about, which illustrated a lot of the scenes. The mystery aspect started off well, and steadily built up, to be resolved in an imaginative way which I'd not anticipated. I enjoyed the narrator's performance, and he gave consistent and different voices to a variety of characters.
Minor niggles...
- rigid-hulled inflatable boats are universally called "ribs"
- keeping a character by them attending a court session on the Sunday of a bank holiday weekend?
- found some of the foreshadowing a little clumsy
- the narrator got a bit excited at times

Kept me guessing...
This had more twists and turns than a mountain road. Totally absorbing and very difficult to take my earphones out when I got to work. ...I just wanted to keep listening!!

Simon Becket has failed yet to provide a gripping story, with lots of twists & turns. The narrator is excellent providing various voices of the book. thank you both

Excellent
This is the second Simon Beckett book I have listened to and it was thoroughly enjoyable and once started difficult to stop, good story line, several twists and another superb performance by J Keeble who brings the whole book to life. I enjoyed this and Calling of the Grave so much I have purchased the rest of the series.

My first time with Simon Beckett
This was the first book of Simon Beckett’s that I had listened to. Beautiful narrated by Jonathan Keeble. Very engaging plot with lots of twists and turns. I really liked that in the end the reader gets closure on all aspects of the plot. Will definitely be seeking out more of his books.
