Summary

The future of democracy is uncertain.

Populist world leaders are dominating headlines and creating a new kind of politics that challenges democratic values and the liberal order.

They influence the media, exert economic power, appoint judges, cultivate populism and seek to undermine the very institutions which brought them into power.

In this gripping narrative, Misha Glenny, journalist and best-selling author of McMafia, tells the stories of six strongmen’s unexpected rise.

Everyone should listen to this

Democracy is dying and here’s how it happened. Beware social media - it has been corrupted beyond its creators’ wildest imaginations. Everyone should be careful where they get their information, and always do your homework. Very up to date and includes crucial assessments of pandemic handling.

Slight slant

Great series, really enjoyed it but can’t quite get on board with the idea that Bojo is continuous with Duerte, Erdogan et al.

Entertaining if a bit sparse in diversity of voices

This is a good listen generally though not hugely revelatory for anyone who’s been paying attention to global politics for the last five years or so. It would be a bit richer with more contributors, and becomes a bit formulaic by the end, and is really let down by the hasty summing up, where SPOILER ALERT a left-leaning tv journalist is left to editorialise at length to provide an all too easy conclusion that dictators are bad because they are men and that misogyny is at the root of their evils.

Interesting but not in-depth and biased

This was a well made production with some interesting insight. However, the coverage was not deep - constrained of course by time - and was not even handed. Whilst the protagonists of this production have made questionable decisions, none were cast in anything other than a dubious light.

A good listen on modern global politics.

Well worth a listen to understand how we’ve been played. Glenny’s other work on Putin also worth a listen.

Superb Glimpses into What Is Really Going On

Short accessible and engaging pieces showing the rise of Popularism and how by using religion racial hatred and social media a number of dictatorships have been born.
This is especially of interest to those living in the UK who want to understand the strategies used in Brexit and the 2019 general election.

Great insight into political iron men

Great tales and educational: my only gripe would be that it isn’t impartial politically and that makes it a bit one sided as a result

Bitter BBC Remoaner

The whole thesis of this podcast is directed towards trying to prove that Boris is as bad as some of the worst anti democratic leaders in the world. Notwithstanding the fact it doesn’t work it is still incredible annoying. I’ve ceased listening to the BBC to get away from this sort of thing. Maybe it is time to cancel my audible subscription as well if this is the way things are going. I suppose I should have known better them to even start listening.
