About this listen

Marathons are no longer impressive.

Pain is to be relished, not avoided.

Hallucinations are perfectly normal.

Ultra running defies conventional logic. Yet this most brutal and challenging sport is now one of the fastest growing in the world. But is it an antidote to modern life or a symptom of a modern illness?

Adharanand Finn travelled to the heart of the sport to find out - and to see if could become an ultra runner himself. His journey took him from the deserts of Oman to the snow-capped peaks of the Rockies, and from a 24-hour track race in Tooting to his ultimate goal, the 105-mile Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc.

The Rise of the Ultra Runners is the electrifying, inspirational account of what he learned along the way. Through encounters with the sport's many colourful characters and his experiences of its soaring highs and crushing lows, Finn offers an unforgettable insight into what can be found at the boundaries of human endeavour.

Captivating!!

Made all the better by hearing the author in his own words. You live through the pain and struggles of Ultra Running whilst appreciating the deep emotional effect this can have upon your perspective on life itself.

Exceptional

I enjoyed this book in so many ways. Adharanand’s narration was superb. The story brilliant. I’ve read and listened to so many books on running, this is one of my favourites.

Gripping

Gripped from the start, brutally honest about how hard ultra running is. Brilliant, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Enjoyable to listen to while on long solo runs

I enjoyed this book and didn't mind the narrator's voice. Was a good companion while out on those long, solo runs while training for my first ultra.

Fantastic story but boring narration...

The content of the book is great but I've struggled to listen to this as the narration leaves a lot to be desired. I understand that it's the author reading but it could have done with a professional narrator to bring the book alive. I'll push on and finish it but listen to the sample first and make your own mind up, I wish I'd have bought the physical book instead

Great look into the world of ultra

Really liked the angle the author approached from, a lot of talk of why people are doing these feats and what’s to be gained. My wife doesn’t understand why I want to do it but I think this author could explain to her much better than I can.
