About this listen

The first girl had a bite mark on her neck, but they traced the DNA to her boyfriend. But the tabloids got hold of the story and called the killer The Rottweiler and the name stuck. The latest murder takes place very near Inez Ferry's antique shop in Marylebone. When the Rottweiler’s trinkets start showing up in the shop, suddenly, everyone Inez knows is a suspect, and the killer feels all too close. Someone saw a shadowy figure running away past the station, but the only other clues are that the murderer usually strangles his victims and removes something personal - like a cigarette lighter or a necklace. Since her husband died, Inez has supplemented her income by taking in tenants. The murderous activities of the sinister 'Rottweiler' will exert a profound influence on the lives of this heterogeneous little community, especially when the suspicion emerges that one of them may be a homicidal maniac.

Very Good Narration

Ruth Rendell is a consistently excellent writer who is not afraid of seeing the world through the eyes of the character who is the murderer. She is a wonderful storyteller, who provides just the right amount of detail and she creates individual, interesting people. She is surely among the very best of crime fiction writers.

Jazz club nice and smooth!

So much in here. Not tension and fear, but characters and humanity. Great reading (thanks to the good 'ole BBC)

I'd forgotten what a good author Rendell is! So much of modern crime writing had dulled my expectations.

Lots of different interesting characters, quirky, never boring. A refreshing change from claustrophobic stories told from the point of view of one or two main characters. This is told from the point of view of multiple characters.
Ruth Rendell weaves the mundane with the horrific beautifully. After all, not all murderers stomp about brooding enigmatically, they eat, sleep and catch colds too, otherwise they'd be a lot easier to spot.
This book reminded me how good Ruth Rendell is, so I'm going to listen to more of her books and stop being disappointed by newer formulaic writers who all seem to write from one persons point of view (their own) in the hope of creating the next Dexter or Girl on a train.

Great characters

I always love Ruth Rendells stories with their unexpected story lines and amazing characters and this one is no exception. The wonderful narrator makes this story even more enjoyable.

Superb characters; strange plot

Beautifully read and voiced by Nigel Anthony, these fascinating characters really came alive. I though that the storyline, though intriguing, was rather convoluted. Still worth the listen.

One you need to stick with.

It grows and gets better as you come to know the characters. The ending made me smile - rather unusually.

Brilliant!

I really enjoyed this, despite disliking most of the characters. Well written and every character is rich and complex. Its one of my favourite Ruth Rendell books.

Nigel Anthony is amazing as always.

Crazy, careering, comical at times

Nigel Anthony does sterling work narrating this story but is quite useless at women’s voices, therefore changing the whole atmosphere to something in pantomime or ‘Are you being served’ style. So you just can’t imagine why the strangely named shop assistant has attracted such strong devotion from her cuckolded paramours. Weird names abound and farce like situations shore up the general tone of this over the top yet strangely absorbing take of Star Street Antiques and the tenants of Ines the landlady there. Sure servings of Will the gorgeous looking looking but childlike man/boy who had his own logic and understanding of the world enrich this multi layered plot.

Excellent characters and story

Many threads rub through this book and the characters involved are brilliantly created. The narration also is excellent. A really interesting and well written book.

My favourite so far!

I’m on a Ruth Rendell marathon and this is my favourite so far! To be fair, I could listen to Nigel Anthony read the yellow pages and be content. Great story and beautifully read.
