About this listen

It's approaching Christmas in Rome and snow is falling in a way that only happens every twenty or thirty years. The city is soon paralyzed by an unseasonal icy grip, and in the dark corners of the Pantheon a grim and mysterious story begins to unfold.

Nic Costa and his partner Gianni Peroni are called to reports of an intruder. Instead they find a woman's naked body, scarred in a geometric pattern. Almost immediately they are met by a team from the FBI determined to take over an investigation into what they claim is a killer murdering American tourists around the world, in ways which link back to the mystical structure of the Pantheon itself.

But one agent, Emily Deacon, has a different story to tell, one that has a tragic personal dimension. Through her and an elusive Iraqi girl Laila, only witness to the death in the Pantheon, Nic Costa is pulled relentlessly into the world of the Iraq war and the shadowy secret agents whose job was to penetrate the regime of Saddam Hussein before the armed forces attacked.

Soon he is aware that there is a conspiracy at the heart of these deaths which runs back to Washington, and the past of Emily Deacon's dead father, a tangle of connections he has to unravel, even if it comes at a considerable personal and professional cost. A madman is loose in the frozen winter landscape of Rome, and as Costa soon realises, he is one the American agents know only too well...

Overlong

It took me a long time to listen to this story, it was satisfying in the end, but could have been considerably shorter. The narrator was good but I disliked his heavy American gangster voice. Not really my favourite

another good one

loved this book, as i did the previous 2. a kosovan refugee child, FBI, US Special Ops, and of course, Nic, Giovani and Theresa.
very well written, and excellently narrated by Saul Reichlin. the first books were a random choice in 2-for-1 offer, book 3 was a deliberate buy ... as will be book 4a

Clever mystery in a wonderful setting

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes I would, it's a brilliant story with great characters. It was very well read and always kept my attention.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Falcone, he's grumpy, he's the boss but is loyal and has a soft centre

Which character – as performed by Saul Reichlin – was your favourite?

Peroni, Saul made him sound exactly as I expected after I'd read the Villa of Mysteries.

Any additional comments?

A wonderful mix of travel and mystery.

Good crime thriller

A easy to listen to crime thriller nicely narrated by Saul Reichlin. Found the FBI agents a little annoying but loved the Italian characters and look forward to listening to more from this series.

FBI in Rome...

Enjoyed the book mostly the narrators voice. Will probably listen to more of his work. The characters are ok although too stereotypical. Not sure I really cared about the plight or unfair treatment of the bad guy though.... Hmm

The series gets better

This is the 3rd book in David Hewson's Rome series and to my mind is the best so far. Not only the best story line but also the best narrator. The development of the characters becomes a more interesting and complex part of the whole and the excellent story line with it's subtle twists make for a great listening experience. I also feel that the narrator on this occasion has got the right feel for the characters and the subtleties of their personalities without using any strange accents which for me spoilt book 1 in the series. All in all an excellent audio book and an excellent series.
