'The Sanatorium will keep you checking over your shoulder. This spine-tingling, atmospheric thriller has it all: an eerie Alpine setting, sharp prose, and twists you'll never see coming. A must-read.' RICHARD OSMAN

'An eerie, atmospheric novel that had me completely on the edge of my seat.' RESSE WITHERSPOON

'At first glance they're magnificent, yet the more she looks, the more she realizes how sinister the mountains appear: raw, jagged spikes. It's not hard to imagine, she thinks, looking out; this place somehow consuming someone, swallowing them whole.'

An imposing, isolated hotel, high up in the Swiss Alps, is the last place Elin Warner wants to be. But she's taken time off from her job as a detective, so when she receives an invitation out of the blue to celebrate her estranged brother's recent engagement, she has no choice but to accept.

Arriving in the midst of a threatening storm, Elin immediately feels on edge. Though it's beautiful, something about the hotel, recently converted from an abandoned sanatorium, makes her nervous - as does her brother, Isaac.

And when they wake the following morning to discover his fiancée Laure has vanished without a trace, Elin's unease grows. With the storm cutting off access to and from the hotel, the longer Laure stays missing, the more the remaining guests start to panic.

But no-one has realized yet that another woman has gone missing. And she's the only one who could have warned them just how much danger they're all in . . .

good

was a good book however was a struggling read due to constant explanation. However not a bad story in the end. if you want a book that only starts to get going half way in then definitely read it. Not sure I would read this author again.

was looking for a change

This was quite a good story but very long winded. I'd expected more as the book has done well, but I was a tadge disappointed

Wow! Brilliant!

So I saw this being talked about on Reese Witherspoons Instagram and as a crime thriller lover knew I had to try it! And it did not disappoint, with so many twists and turns it was impossible to know the outcome (like many crime thrillers nowadays) loved the story something I’ve not heard before and just loved it! Finished it in two days! Cannot wait for the next book! This was brilliant! 100% recommend!

Nicely built atmosphere

The atmosphere is well built and the beginning is compelling. On the other hand I found the characters weak and the plot has some obvious holes. The performance is tense, but didn’t help make the main character relatable or credible. It’s an ok book.

Very disappointing.

Very weak storyline struggled to get through it not much going for it at all despite being a best seller.

Ok

Performance is okay on the whole, though accents are all over the place. The story started well, a bit spooky, taking place in well trodden horror setting. The main character is a terrible detective on leave, she’s not very good, jumping around from suspect to suspect, as does the narrative, layering clumsily built characters with reasons to be the killer. Ending is odd, suggesting more problems to come for the protagonist who can’t leave her past behind.

Great thriller for winter nights...

This was a great thriller for cold winter nights! The author managed to create an intricate story with great twists and turns. Hopefully, this will be the start of a great series!

The sanitarium

A great book, thrilling story and keeps you guessing until the end. A tale within a tale.

Best audio book I've listened to so far

Brilliant - Really enjoyed listening to this. Just wish there was a Sandman 2 to download.

poor narration

unfortunately the narrator made each sentence sound like a bullet point.
I really wanted to finish as interestwd in this story but really struggled to follow it and really get into it.
Having ADHD audible has opened up my world or 'stories', just not this 1.
