*WINNER OF THE BOLLINGER EVERYMAN WODEHOUSE PRIZE FOR COMIC FICTION 2023*

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

‘Funny, clever and sweet’– Sunday Times

‘The much loved comic proves adept at noirish fiction in a debut whose surrealist humour sets it apart’ – Observer

My name is Gary. I’m a thirty-year-old legal assistant with a firm of solicitors in London. To describe me as anonymous would be unfair but to notice me other than in passing would be a rarity. I did make a good connection with a girl, but that blew up in my face and smacked my arse with a fish slice.

Gary Thorn goes for a pint with a work acquaintance called Brendan. When Brendan leaves early, Gary meets a girl in the pub. He doesn’t catch her name, but falls for her anyway. When she suddenly disappears without saying goodbye, all Gary has to remember her by is the book she was reading: The Satsuma Complex. But when Brendan goes missing, Gary needs to track down the girl he now calls Satsuma to get some answers.

And so begins Gary’s quest, through the estates and pie shops of South London, to finally bring some love and excitement into his unremarkable life…

A story with a cast of unforgettable characters, The Satsuma Complex is the brilliantly funny smash hit first novel by bestselling author and comedian Bob Mortimer.

Classic Mortimer!

A book full of ‘Bobisms’. If you’re a fan of Bob Mortimer then you won’t be disappointed.

The narration is fantastic. Sally Phillips is the perfect counterpart to Mortimer. They both have an ability to bring the characters to life. Fans of Athletico Mince might recognise some of the voices Mortimer does, albeit for different characters.

Aside from the aspects you’d expect from a novel by Mortimer, the murder mystery plot is interesting and takes some fun and gripping twists. It was hard not to root for our unassuming main character, Gary, as well as our other narrator Emily, and Gary’s neighbour and best friend Grace.

A must for all Mortimer fans and beyond.

Brilliant.

I absolutely adored this book. I laughed out loud more times than I could count. Had absolutely no idea what to expect and the story took loads of unexpected turns. Great stuff.

Loved It

I think the reviews that don't like Bob narrating miss the point he is brilliant. There is so much that sounds like previous sketches or characters that it couldn't be narrated by anyone else. It is funny and witty and it has all the elements of stupid that you love from his humour. If you like his comedy or his appearances on programmes like would I lie to you then this is like an extended interview story. Just brilliant. I hope he writes and narrates more.

Brilliant if you're a Bob Mortimer fan!

If you're looking for a conventional crime thriller then this is probably not for you. It is a great story though filled with funny quirky characters, and with all the surreal humour you would expect with the mind of Bob Mortimer. The reading from Bob and Sally is funny in their interpretations of the same characters and both bring something different to the story which makes it enjoyable to listen to. Overall I loved it!

Wonderful

This is a great book made exceptional by Mr Mortimer’s vocal renditions of the characters. I was extremely sad when it was finished and hopes he writes and narrates another one soon.

Such a treat!

for me it made it that Bob read it, there were some good twists. I listened to it over a couple of weeks and the characters and the story sunk in. The Geordie squirrel was a delight.

Like Mike Skinner/The Streets wrote a novel and Bob Mortimer read it. Not about ducks tho.
