Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Chicago. 1992. A hospital patient wakes to find two strangers by his bed.

They show him a list of names and ask a simple but impossible question. Minutes later he falls to his death from his twelfth-floor window - a fall which generates some unexpected attention.

That attention comes from the Secretary of Defense, who calls for an inter-agency task force to investigate. Jack Reacher, recently demoted from Major, is assigned as the Army's representative. If he gets a result, great. If not, he's a convenient fall guy.

Reacher may be an exceptional military investigator, but office politics aren't what gets him up in the morning. As he races to identify a cold-blooded killer and uncover a secret that stretches back 23 years, he must navigate around his new partners.

Will Reacher bring the bad guys to justice the official way...or his way?

Although the Jack Reacher novels can be listened to in any order, The Secret is the 28th book in the internationally bestselling series.

Very poor shadow of the original

Sadly the last two, in my opinion, have definitely been below par. Coupled with the dire, monotone voice of the worst narrator, I had to keep going back and re listen because I kept zoning out. Such a shame but I think this will be my last one

Average

I’m not sure of the page count but the Audible length seemed much less than previous.

The main plot was Ok but Reacher spent the first quarter of the book off on another story which just seemed like a ‘filler’.

In the past each year’s release was exciting and offered a few days of Reacher exploits and reacherisms. This time it was almost an effort getting towards the end. Maybe we shouldn’t expect ‘the clock in his head’ or his other habits certainly in a historical book like this but it’s those that raise the smile for those of us who have followed annually since Killing Floor.

To be fair, the quality of this book was on a par with many other books from authors like Grisham, Baldacci, Leather, Forsyth etc but frankly (and sadly) I feel that’s a demotion for the Child family!

Reading by Geoff Harding was excellent as always.

Disappointing

This may be the last Reacher book that I purchase. It falls far short of previous books in series. If Reacher is continue any future stories, must, like this one,
be set in Reacher's past. Those of us who have been loyal readers since book 1 are aware that Reacher was born in 1960, making him 63 years old, meaning that he will soon be beating the baddies with his Zimmer frame. As to the current offering, It has no depth. The characters are cardboard cutouts. This shows all the hallmarks of having been phoned in on a wet Wednesday to fulfil contract requirements . The Childs must do better next time. It is a shame that Joe Reacher was killed off so early, it would have been interesting to have seen more him over the years interacting with his brother.

Best one for a while

Love the Reacher series. Especially the stories that go back in time to his day’s an MP. Good story and excellent narration

Reacher by Numbers

Reacher’s 28th outing takes him back to his army days investigating a series of murders.

There’s nothing wrong with this entry in the series. If you like Reacher books it will have enough for you to enjoy but for me, the series is fast growing stale. Fortunately Child has laid the foundations for a strong protagonist but beyond this, the book is a fairly generic investigative story which feels like it never really gets out of first gear. Supporting characters are under developed and the antagonists feel a country mile from those we saw early on in the series. Can’t help but feel the series needs to go in a new direction or maybe Reacher should hang up his folding toothbrush.

Narration from Jeff Harding is very…… Jeff Harding. It’s disappointing the producers don’t see fit to pair him with a female co-narrator to help with the female voices. It’s always been the weakest element of the performance and really needs addressing as it proves dates in comparison to other audio book offerings.

Just about enjoyable but if you’re new to Reacher, go back to the earlier books. They’re just far better.

I love Jack Reacher but…….

I really do love the Jack reacher books, they are detailed well thought out and the narrator is the only person for this role however, this book has none of the soul of Jack Reacher there is very little of the brutal but moral man that we have known and loved. I accept this is back early in his career but, it felt to me that he was only mere shadow of his real character. It’s an ok book but to me could have been about any other soldier.

Typically good Reacher book, difficult narrator

Nearly gave up on this book as struggled with the narration (everything is read like a statement and so it loses the drama) but an interesting story

So so

The idea for the book was reasonable enough and I enjoyed getting experience Reacher in good military days again… the story seemed rushed though with no real connection between listener/reader and the characters. Overall I was disappointed.

Highly enjoyable and easy listen detective story

Loved the story. Was very easy to listen to. The Sanson sisters were great!

Narration voices were a bit limited and story was a little short.
