Summary

The next gloriously uplifting, escapist, historical read from ‘the queen of the contemporary Cornish novel’ (Guardian)

As one of the Navy's most skilled mapmakers, Merry knows that lives depend on her work in the War Office. But when a family crisis draws her back to her beloved Cornwall, she finds herself working alongside Jake, an enigmatic American officer, on secret operations spanning the rugged coasts of Cornwall and Brittany which she knows so well.

As rumours and suspicion swirl around her family, Merry is increasingly drawn to Jake, despite the defences she's built around her heart. It's a dangerous time to fall in love; the tides of war are rising and there is everything to lose…

The award-winning author Liz Fenwick returns with a glorious, sweeping novel full of intrigue and passion.

Loved this book

I really enjoyed listening to this book. I really liked the characters and it kept me guessing how it would end. I was surprised at the ending. My best book this year. Several months on and I still think about it. I’ll be listening to it again soon.

Oh my goodness, this book should have more than 5*

This audio book is outstanding, full of atmosphere, the author draws you into the book. One of the best books I've read, it will pull at your heartstrings. So interesting to learn more of the history of wartime Cornwall. This has to be the best book so far the author has written.

Totally enthralling

Thankyou Liz Fenwick for opening our eyes to those who aided the 2nd world war effort especially the unsung female characters behind the scenes. Learning about the team of skilled service people on their operations in Cornwall was very inciteful. I loved the characters in this book and often found myself in tears. Merry was an amazing character throughout this story. This book is well worth reading... i loved every minute of listening to it getting lost in the amazingly crafted words put together so brilliatly and brought to life wonderfully by the narrator. Cant wait to listen to more from this author she has now become a firm favourite.

Absolutely brilliant - a 'must - read'

For me this is Liz Fenwick's best book yet. Loved how the story was narrated in first person, the narrators were excellent throughout. Very interesting history of the role of map makers and special operations during the war. I was hooked from the start and couldn't stop. More stories like this please !

based on local history. Well researched.

Written in first person. Painted a picture of differing lives during very challenging and frightening times.
