About this listen

Australia, 1946: 650 brides are departing for England to meet the men they married in wartime. But instead of the luxury liner they were expecting, they find themselves aboard an aircraft carrier, alongside a thousand men.

On the sun-baked decks, old loves and past promises become distant memories, and tensions are stretched to the limit as brides and husbands change their minds. And for Frances Mackenzie, it soon becomes clear that the journey is more important than the destination....

Lovely warming story

Loved the narrator. This story was wonderful and to have it intertwined with snippets of true press announcements made it all the more moving.

Intriguing

Well having listened to this I’ve looked up the transportation of Australian brides to the UK. All very interesting. Loved that the book keeps you guessing until the end.

Australia to England

Such a lovely story both of sadness leaving families in Australia and the the happiness when landing in England, but not for all. The way the brides managed with everything on board the ship was explained so well and the lovely ending was beautiful. I really enjoyed listening to this story and the narrator, Nicolette Mckenzie, was excellent.

A story of Australian war brides

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and took the trouble to look up the history of aircraft carrier in question and discovered that many of the events depicted actually happened. The story unfolds quite slowly, which is evocative of the long passage of the warship from Australia to Plymouth via the Suez Canal.
