Editor reviews

Listening to Walter Covell perform the voice of Dr. Watson in Audible’s series of Sherlock Holmes sagas is like watching Holmes stalk London’s foggy streets. A master is at work. Covell’s Watson is a gruff-voiced, fast-talking Englishman and the perfect foil to Holmes’ narcotic, nonchalant manliness.

The second installment in the Holmes series, The Sign of the Four delves deeper than its predecessor into Holmes’s emotional and spiritual lives, including his infamous addictions. The mystery revolves around an unbidden gift of pearls, convicts, and corrupt prison guards with a secret pact. As always with Holmes, listeners will be darkly entertained while their powers of deduction are challenged.

Summary

Miss Mary Morstan has been receiving pearls and she knows not why or from whom. Now she receives something else: a letter that promises to reveal the mystery and to "right the wrongs" against her. "If you distrust me," continued the correspondent, "bring two friends." She brings Sherlock Holmes and Watson.

Terrible recording

Avoid, scratchy audio and read by someone decidedly lacking in voice acting skills.
