Summary

The Sleeping and The Dead is a tense psychological thriller from Ann Cleeves, author and creator of three astounding TV series: Shetland, Vera and The Long Call.

'Cleeves again excels in her sense of place in this cleverly plotted psychological thriller' – The Times

Northumberland detective Peter Porteous is called to Cranwell Lake, where a diving instructor has made a gruesome discovery. In the water lies a corpse – the body of a teenager who has clearly been dead for many years.

After trawling through the missing persons files, Porteous comes to the conclusion that the corpse is Michael Grey, an enigmatic and secretive young man who was reported missing by his foster parents in 1972.

The news report leaves prison officer Hannah Morton in shock. Michael had been her boyfriend, and she had been with him the night he disappeared. And now the discovery is bringing back dreaded, long-buried memories from her past . . .

Ann Cleeves Classic Crime - engaging mysteries to savour, beloved characters to meet again.

A beautifully crafted thriller

Three-dimensional characters and plot twists will leave you guessing to the end.
This is the first book of Ann Cleeve's that I've read that wasn't in the Shetland or Vera series, but it definitely didn't disappoint. the same beautifully crafted story that makes you care for the characters and keeps you wondering until the very end.

just so good

Everything about this book is something I don't usually like, multiple narratives, not a serise (we can but hope), jumping through time.... but I love it. Anne Cleeves at her very best.

Excellent

Slow burner in the beginning but pace builds up to a tantalising story with excellent performance.

Another good mystery

I liked the contrast of characters. Liked how the past & present intertwined. Didn’t guess the ending !!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book

I literally didn’t work it out until the last 10 minutes. I read loads of crime books and thought I was well tuned to pick up the clues and spot the red herrings, but this one really kept me guessing. Great narration too.

Slow burn

I enjoyed this book, Anne Cleeves is an excellent web-weaver of a storyteller. I would be keen to see the character development of the detective. He is like a cross between inspector Morse for his stoic persona but even more reserved. Narrator was excellent.

A new series

New ‘tec series (to me, at least), featuring Peter Porteous. Set, more or less, in ‘Vera country’, it is, as you might expect from Ann Cleeves, the audio equivalent of a page turner, well plotted and well told. Good narrator, too: someone I hadn’t come across before. I’ll definitely be buying the next one.
