Summary

Perfect for fans of Travis Baldree and TJ Klune, The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst is a New York Times bestselling cosy fantasy tale full of stolen spellbooks, unexpected friendships, sweet jams and even sweeter romance.

'Reading this book was like sitting in the sun . . . a warm, peaceful delight of a novel' – Katherine Arden, author of The Bear and the Nightingale

Every home needs a little magic . . .

Kiela has always had trouble dealing with people, and as librarian at the Great Library of Alyssium, she hasn’t had to.

She and her assistant, Caz, a sentient spider plant, have spent most of the last eleven years sequestered among the empire’s precious spellbooks, protecting the magic for the city’s elite. But a revolution is brewing and when the library goes up in flames, Kiela and Caz steal whatever books they can and flee to the faraway island where she grew up. But to her dismay, in addition to a nosy – and very handsome – neighbour, she finds the town in disarray.

The empire has slowly been draining power from the island, and now Kiela is determined to make things right. But opening up her own spellshop comes with its own risks – the consequence of sharing magic with commoners is death. And as Kiela starts to make a place for herself among the townspeople, she realizes she must break down the walls she has kept so high . . .

From award-winning author Sarah Beth Durst, The Spellshop is a cottagecore cosy fantasy following a woman's unexpected journey through the low-stakes market of illegal spell-selling and the high-risk business of starting over.

A Snuggle for a Stormy Day

This might just be one of the loveliest books I've had the delight of experiencing. It's a well thought through, gentle and beautifully contained world, easily loveable characters, and is very elegantly written. The plot is well paced, and never unnecessarily complicated, a trap some fantasy novels can fall into. I never underestimate the value or importance of a real comfort-read, and I could tell only a few chapters in that The Spellshop was going to become a go-to for me. Whether you want a sunshine happiness book for a warm, sunny day, or cozy read to hunker down with on a stormy winter night, I can't recommend this book enough, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

An unexpected magical cozy read

This book was a total surprise! I usually read dark romance, enemies to lovers, spice rating of 3 plus (think blood and ash). I was in a book slump though and was seeing this described everywhere as cozy, warm and a comforting magical read. There are no humans in this world, everyone is a type of being but it's not really focused on as everyone is different. It's light hearted, won't make you tense but has a detailed and loveable story and characters. Their is humour, light romance (no spice) that is really sweet, a world you could imagine living in, magic and no cliffhanger so you leave satisfied and happy. I quite honestly want to move here! A beautiful book and we'll worth your time and a credit/money to read!!!

Cozy fantasy with the right amount of tension and antics to keep me engrossed

I like cozy fantasy but often find myself getting a bit bored as there’s usually no tension or conflict, nothing much happening. But this had just the right amount to hold my interest and still be very cozy. A great listen in between my usual books.

Cozy attempt at Romantasy

The narrator does a great job and some of the story’s elements are really interesting
But over I wasn’t drawn in
I had a hard time connecting with the main character who is a very classic shy librarian trope, constantly self doubting and self deprecating herself.
I also could not picture the different characters and creatures very well from the descriptions.
As for the romance, I am not sure I got what these 2 saw in each other but I hope other readers will!
