Summary

In New York City, a girl called Leonora vanishes without a trace. Years earlier and miles upstate, Goldie, a wild, negligent mother, searches for a man to help raise her precocious son, Paul, who later discovers that the only way to save his soul is to run away. As the narrative moves back and forth in time, we find deeper interconnections between these stories and growing clues about Leonora – this missing girl whose face looks out from telephone poles and billboards – whom one character will give anything to save.

Critic reviews

"[Braunstein's] debut novel is an unsettling read that is also strangely compelling, though the author reserves all of her compassion for her characters, sparing none for her readers.... Through random encounters and elliptical dialogue, Braunstein locates the pain in these people’s lives and makes it shimmer." ( Booklist)

Sheer poetry – Exquisite – Powerful

What made the experience of listening to The Sweet Relief of Missing Children the most enjoyable?

Perceptive description in minute detail which is breathtaking. The stories of each individual are so very clear, the writing is incredible.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Sweet Relief of Missing Children?

No one moment was the most memorable. All of the book is memorable leaving an imprint sometimes so tenuous it just slips away then brought back pages later- Just superb.

What about Xe Sands’s performance did you like?

The flow and rhythm . She annoyed me at first but I soon adapted to the rhythm and flow ( you have yo to enjoy and understand the whole thing) I do not think anyone else could have done the book justice.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

In some ways listening to the book in one sitting could help in regards to pulling all the strands together as I often had to go back to remember exactly where I was in the scheme of things. I do not however think it would be easy to digest in one go

Any additional comments?

For those of you who may find this book difficult to get on with start of by listening to it as if it is a book of short stories ( it's not) and then link them all together. After book two you will have got the hang of the threads. I loved this book and listening to it was addictive. If I had read the book I would have been able to flip back pages( which I would have highlighted with a few notes) to get my bearings which was not possible with listening.
