Summary

The Malabar coast is full of dangers: greedy tradesmen, fearless pirates, and men full of vengeance. But for a Courtney, the greatest danger might just be his own family…

After his father’s gambling debts leave him penniless and in danger, Francis Courtney seeks revenge and fortune in South Africa. But on arrival, he uncovers a truth that leaves him overwhelmed and disoriented. Meanwhile, his cousin Christopher Courtney begins to make his own way in the world, foregoing the righteous path and falling prey to betrayal, violence and treachery.

In this epic journey from the southernmost point of Africa to the lush Indian coastline, the lives of these two Courtney men will intertwine, and forever alter the course of their famous family.

From the world’s greatest storyteller comes a compelling and breathless tale of intrigue and betrayal that draws the Courtney’s together, and just as easily tears them apart.

Returns to a more classic Wilbur style

I’m a big fan of Wilbur. Some of his stories rank in my top ten fictional novels. That said, some of the latest stories have be slightly less gripping than his others. This tale is part of my favourite branch of the Courtney family tree, starting with Sir Francis and Hal Courtney in Birds of Prey. Perhaps this lays the groundwork for it to be good... It’s real swashbuckling stuff and moves at pace, from one frantic battle to another, underpinned by the previous family inter- generational feuds and the perspectives of the characters that disagree with each other. As the branches of the stories twists and turns and builds up to a powerful end. Though sometimes the fetes of survival are perhaps a little far fetched... the heroic bravery/honour and adventure is what you read it for! It’s well narrated and I enjoyed it, particularly on a four hour car journey! Reload your musket, and charge! You won’t be disappointed.

Most enjoyable book

I’ve read/ listened to many Wilbur Smith books but for me The Tigers Prey has been the best. The interweaving of the Courtney family storyline is sublime. Mike Grady did a superb job of the reading.
