About this listen
As the year 1349 approaches, the Black Death continues its devastating course across England. In Dorseteshire, the quarantined people of Develish question whether they are the only survivors. Guided by their beloved young mistress, Lady Anne, they wait, knowing that when their dwindling stores are finally gone they will have no choice but to leave. But where will they find safety in the desolate wasteland outside?
One man has the courage to find out. Thaddeus Thurkell, a free-thinking, educated serf, strikes out in search of supplies and news. A compelling leader, he and his companions quickly throw off the shackles of serfdom and set their minds to ensuring Develish's future - and freedom for its people. But what use is freedom that cannot be gained lawfully?
When Lady Anne and Thaddeus conceive an audacious plan to secure her people's independence, neither foresees the life-threatening struggle over power, money and religion that follows....

Great characters & wonderful historical research
The writing and research sweeps you up and takes you into a wholly believable medieval world. The plot turns and twists in an interesting way, although there are times when it becomes a little stilted. More action and less exposition would have made it a five star review.’

Brilliant conclusion following on from first book
I absolutely loved this and it’s predecessor.
A feel good ending in a book about the Black Death and without being soapy or shallow- remarkable!

Brilliant story and reading
I couldn't stop listening to this story. I loved the first book, and while this is clearly more about the aftermath of surviving and moving forward from the disease - it is just as engaging and interesting.

OK, but perhaps not quit as good as the first
it was a good listen, and I'm enthralled with lady. the lies around Thaddeus was a bit hard to believe, but it was entertaining to see how the plot and lies unfolded

Excellent story beautifully read
This and the first book in the series ‘The Last Hours’ make an excellent listen. The storyline is compelling really drawing the listener into the tale. Helen Keeley’s narration is easy to listen to, clear and her use of voices adds to the whole.
If you enjoy historical fiction I really recommend this book.

So disappointed
Quite honestly this was one of the worst books I have read. Alongside historical inaccuracies as to calling the plague The Black Death in the 1300’s, that just didn’t happen. I could have lived with that but both title characters were just unlikable and unbelievable. I found myself routing for the bad guys. I cannot believe it’s from the same author as her earlier works such as The Scold’s Bridle. Perhaps avoid historical novels in the future .
