About this listen

The Vanderbeekers have always lived in the brownstone on 141st Street. It's practically a member of the family. So when their reclusive, curmudgeonly landlord decides not to renew their lease, the five siblings have 11 days to do whatever it takes to stay in their beloved home and convince the dreaded landlord just how wonderful they are...and all is fair in love and war when it comes to keeping their home.

Brownhouse dynamics

This book is a little gem as it is very well written with many intertwining story lines. There are, after all, 5 children's stories to be told and then the overarching story that the family has been given notice and needs to find a new home just before Christmas.
It can be said that the story is somewhat sugar coated as there is a happy outcome for all and this certainly does not represent the experience of many children whose parents are evicted.
However, the sibling dynamics and each of the children in themselves are so very well crafted, it was a joy to live through this story with them and see how they evolve and learn and grow up.

Beautiful story-telling

This is a warm-hearted story of a family living in New York who face moving from the brownstone they've always lived in. They're not wealthy, but they are part of a community and they don't want to leave, so the kids set about trying to persuade their landlord to renew their lease. It doesn't all go to plan, and there are squabbles and minor disasters along the way.

Both adults and kids are totally convincing, and the family pets and the homeless kittens in the backyard all have their parts to play too.

It woyld make wonderful family listening, a pleasure for adults and children alike.

modern day 'Christmas Carol'

I enjoyed the feel good factor of the story.
It was predictable all the way through, still a sweet story though
