Summary
The novel from the bestselling author of The Flatshare and The No-Show.
Two sworn enemies. A failing hotel. One chance to save the season...
It's the busiest season of the year, and Forest Manor Hotel is quite literally falling apart. So when Izzy and Lucas are given the same shift on the hotel's front desk, they have no choice but to put their differences aside and see it through.
The hotel won't stay afloat beyond Christmas without some sort of miracle. But when Izzy returns a guest's lost wedding ring, the reward convinces management that this might be the way to fix everything. With four rings still sitting in lost property, the race is on for Izzy and Lucas to save their beloved hotel - and their jobs.
As their bitter rivalry turns into something much more complicated, Izzy and Lucas begin to wonder if there's more at stake here than the hotel's future. Can the two of them make it through the season with their hearts intact?

Great story. Struggled with narration
I loved the story. Beth never fails to write a great book. I really enjoyed the female narration by Jessie, unfortunately the Lucas narration was hard to hear clearly, when he did voices from other characters it was fine but the Lucas narration was muffled and difficult to understand. Such a shame. I’m glad I persevered as I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I thought I knew the end of the story about 10 different times…then it changed!
I absolutely love Beth O’Leary’s style of writing from 2 different perspectives. I thought this story was nearing its conclusion on a few occasions, and I’d have been disappointed with the ending I imagined. There were so many plot twists and turns and “aha” moments, particularly with the other receptionist about 3/4 through (no spoilers here). As usual a wonderful story and one I inhaled in under 24 hours!

Ok listen, some good twists
The female narrator was clearer & louder than the make one so that sometimes made listening hard when the man was speaking - maybe because I listen in the kitchen when cooking. Sadly not as good as the flatshare, more a cheesy romance novel

Predictable & a bit cringy
I’ve really enjoyed all of Beth O’Leary’s books but this one was a bit hard to get through. Predictable and with dialogue that had me cringing at times. Disappointing and lacking the originality and spark from her other books

Good story but poor performance
Good story but it was hard to get into it. I think Lucas’s performance was very poor, it was very hard for me to listen at the beginning.

Uplifting
An uplifting listen. Loved Jessic Cave narrating but found Lucas a bit hard to listen to. Took more concentration than usual. A good listen but still prefer her other books more 😊

Enjoyable fun
Loved the cast, their accents and Beth's use of Brazilian Portuguese. It all added to the story and listening experience.

Umm....,Nice 🤔 🤔 🤔 3 Stars ⭐⭐⭐
I feel a bit undecided to be honest.
I LOVED 'The Flatshare',
I LIKED 'The Switch',
I LOVED 'The Roadtrip',
I HATED 'The No-Show'
BUT this book 'The Wake-Up Call' from Beth O'Leary was a mixture!
I love romantic comedies. The story was an easy one, light hearted with not a lot of depth.
It took ages to get into the story, the male narration was annoying as Lino Facioli was difficult to understand with his heavy cold and nasal Brazilian Accent yet when he voiced other characters, Lino had a fantastic clear English accent. I have listened to Jessie Cave narrating before and she is good, I am used to her voice.
I didn't like that their were no numbers to the chapters, it was frustrating and confusing at times.
I feel bad for Beth because she smashed it with the massive hit THE FLATSHARE and it was so good it became one of my favourite books ever plus it then become a tv series, so lots of people put Beth O'Leary on a pedal stool and expect exceptional books from her.
Based on this book only, I LOVE Christmas Stories and this was a "nice" romcom so 3 Stars ⭐⭐⭐
