About this listen

Winner of the Exeter Novel Prize

Alone in the world, Elspeth Swansome has taken the position of nanny to a family on the remote Scottish island of Skelthsea.

Her charge, Mary, is a strange child. Distracted and secretive, she hasn't uttered a word since the sudden death of her twin, William - just days after their former nanny disappeared.

With her charge defiantly silent, Elspeth turns to the islanders. But no one will speak of what happened to William.

Just as no one can explain the hypnotic lullabies sung in empty corridors.

Nor the strange dolls that appear in abandoned rooms.

Nor the faint whistling that comes in the night....

As winter draws in and passage to the mainland becomes impossible, Elspeth finds herself trapped.

But is this house haunted by the ghosts of the past?

Or the secrets of the living?

Chilling, twisty and emotionally gripping, The Whistling is an atmospheric pause-resister with shades of the classics, yet a unique character of its own. Perfect for fans of Susan Hill and Laura Purcell.

Really enjoyable book.

This is a perfect gothic ghost story, really well narrated. An absolute pleasure to listen to curled up on a winters night. Just the right level of suspense for me. Thank you.

Couldn't finish this unfortunately

The story seemed okay, standard spookiness in a creepy house, which is what I was looking for. However, I couldn't get past chapter 11 as the narrator was irritating to listen to. I have mesophonia which is pretty bad when it comes to over-emphasising of the 'S' sound - and this narrator does that. The accent was a little strong for a narrator as well, but again that is my personal preference and subjective. (I am well aware of how unreasonable these points are, but sadly they are out of my control!)

A well told story

A beautifully narrated and spooky tale. I couldn’t stop listening. A great retelling of a gothic ghost story.

Not bad; quite atmospheric

I listened to it all and it nicely passed a winter's day on holiday, but I won't be saving it as a repeat listen. Fairly charming ghost story with some much-heralded twists that make the plotting on the whole feel a little slow, though an atmosphere of creeping horror is nicely sustained. One massive plot angle of some interest is weirdly wholly abandoned, which is mildly annoying. Overall perfectly fine, and very nicely narrated.

It was a very easy book I’m trying to get into readying and thought listening would help me to start over all I liked the book

Lovely dark gothic horror

Loved the female gaze, the island setting and the rich description. Loved the charming narration. The story was predictable in places but left enough ambiguity that the conclusion came later than I expected.

A great book beautifully performed

I really enjoyed the story and was kept really interested throughout. I found the characters believable and I cared about them and what happened to them. It was spooky and had a lot of atmosphere, and the performance was really stellar. I listen to tons of audiobooks and podcasts and the performance is definitely the hardest bit to get right, and this audiobook is a brilliant example of how good it can get.
