Summary
Exclusive to Audible! Listen to a discussion between the author and the narrator of The Widow at the end of this recording.
We've all seen him: the man - the monster - staring from the front page of every newspaper, accused of a terrible crime.
But what about her: the woman who grips his arm on the courtroom stairs - the wife who stands by him?
Jean Taylor's life was blissfully ordinary. Nice house, nice husband. Glen was all she'd ever wanted: her Prince Charming.
Until he became that man accused, that monster on the front page. Jean was married to a man everyone thought capable of unimaginable evil.
But now Glen is dead, and she's alone for the first time, free to tell her story on her own terms.
Jean Taylor is going to tell us what she knows.Critic reviews

Realistic relatable characters
What does Clare Corbett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
She gave a good performance and enhanced the story with the accents, tone and mood.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, although it was easy to pick up from where you left off

Great, no frills British psychological drama
It's rare to find psychological thrillers that aren't over the top. Instead of bodies piling up, this entire novel premises around one particular child abduction and how the people around were affected. The widow of the alleged criminal is a completely flawed person, battling her own demons whilst trying to live with him and the press / police constantly hounding her. She is by far imperfect. If I say anymore it may reveal too much. Looking forward to see this on the small screen.

Very enjoyable
Loved the narration, loved the story and the characters, Fiona got inside them and the narrator drew them out. Despite the miserable subject, it wasn't written in 'high drama', yet I couldn't wait to hear what happened next.
I really enjoyed the author's talk before the book started and the discussion between author and narrator at the end was interesting. I had never considered before how a narrator might be affected by a story. It was interesting to hear how much the author enjoys listening to books and plays and I wonder if that influenced how she wrote.
Looking forward to your next book Fiona!

Brilliant first novel!
This is a superb audio book with that kept me gripped. absolutely flawless in every respect. Characters were perfectly drawn and wonderfully unreliable narrators. Kept me guessing which viewpoint was real up until the end. top marks for a great book well acted out.

Beautifully written
Love this book, I would say it's a must list but it is about a very sensitive area of live and may be upsetting to some. That aside it is so well read as well and the characters come to life beautifully.

Totally mesmerised me
What did you like most about The Widow?
Trying to understand the mindset of Jean or Jeanie. Not quite knowing if it could possibly involve The Widow or not. It gave what seemed a very realistic insight into what no doubt does happen to people, no matter how wicked.
What other book might you compare The Widow to, and why?
This could be compared albeit 'distantly' to some of Jodi Pocults earlier books in as much as she too tackles real life dilemmas that some people are unwittingly thrown into. But this book has no underlying 'moral' to push, its just a haunting story about what seems to be a more common sick obsession for some men.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
Jean & Bob talking in the woods was very touching.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The book made me very sad, I cannot begin to understand or feel any sympathy for this behaviour and in part it made me angry when the lead character referred to himself as being 'ill' when in fact he was simply perverted.
Any additional comments?
I am amazed that this could be this authors first novel, lets hope we get more.

An insight...
...I purchased this title and whilst unlistened to, found it was "haunting" me. Never able to get my head these partiular aspects of the human psyche, I've definitely learned from Fiona Barton 's thorough research, albeit this a work of fiction.
