About this listen

FROM THE NO. 1 BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF WAR LORD COMES AN EPIC RETELLING OF THE ARTHURIAN LEGEND

In the Dark Ages, a legendary warrior arises to unite a divided land . . .

_________

Uther, the High King of Britain, is dead.

His only heir is the infant Mordred. Yet each of the country's lesser kings seek to claim the crown for themselves.

While they squabble and spoil for war, a host of Saxon armies gather, preparing for invasion.

But no one has counted on the fearsome warlord Arthur.

Handed power by Merlin and pursuing a doomed romance with the beautiful Guinevere, Arthur knows he will struggle to unite the country – let alone hold back the Saxon enemy at the gates.

Yet destiny awaits him . . .

From the epic and bestselling author who has gripped millions.

If you have the slightest interest in Arthuriana....

An extraordinary reimagining of the Arthur legend, set in fifth century Britain. All the characters are here, but stripped of all the nonsense that has accumulated around them over the years, and in some cases fundamentally altered - in a good way! Fifth century Britain is brought alive for readers of quality historical fiction. And the reading is impeccable. Highly recommended.

Simply Amazing

In my opinion the greatest work by Mr Cornwell - a fantastically paced series with engrossing characters. Derfel is (unlike Uhtred) a man we can empathise with and we follow his tale as a young boy to an old man. There's a great hook too which you pick up in the first chapter - the answer to which is teased subtly throughout. I read this series pretty much every year and now i can listen to it as well. Really well narrated and nigh on perfect.

A good listen

This is a very long story which took me through many hours of gardening with my earphones in during the summer. The overall story was good, although if I had been reading a book I may have flicked through a few pages of battle descrptions to move the story alng a bit, that's just personal taste. Excellent narration, which really brought the characters alive. I will search for Jonathan Keeble again to listen to.

A story brought to life

I read this book nearly thirty years ago and enjoyed it then. That enjoyment has been enhanced a hundredfold by the superb narration of Jonathan Keeble

An exciting and engaging tale

A different take on the Arthurian legends, but one that is believable and relatable, this is a marvellous tale filled with treachery, betrayal, battle, love and power. The narrator was perfect in my opinion, had the right accent(s), tone and pitch. Thoroughly recommended for fans of historical fiction.

Great unless you know how Irish and Welsh work

Keeble is always great but it is shocking that he wasn't given a pronunciation guide.
