A story of love and solidarity among enslaved women in Pompeii
Interesting take on Women’s lives at the lowest level of Roman life. The sisterhood, the rivalry, the utter lack of choice. Sounds harsh, and in places it is, but the female characters and their relationships with each other really make it.

Great story, meticulously researched
Elodie Harper brings Pompeii to life in a story of a brothel and the people who live there. In particular, the life of Amara, a Greek woman sold into slavery. The brutality of the Roman era is brought sharply into view, but also the beauty and refinement of the wealthy houses and bath houses. The story-line is an unusual one, following the lives of the brothel slaves as they all try to reconcile themselves to their powerless and brutal existence. This makes the book sound a hard read, but it isn’t - the friendships between the slaves and the descriptions of life in Pompeii make for a warm and fascinating story. I am so glad there is a sequel!

absolutely loved it. beautiful narration, page turner plot, very well researched realistic details, good writing if not a literary masterpiece. i really did not want this book to end.

Couldn’t put it down
Read it in just over a day, staying up all night to finish it.
I think it’s important to first and foremost point out that this is not an erotic book and highlights many of the horrendous experiences that were had. The content was at times graphic and sensitive, it was done so in a way that it showed how normalised violence and fear was as a part of Amaras life.
Harper clearly did her research and it was fascinating to know more about Pompeii and what life could have been like from a slaves point of view.
The writing was done so in a way that it was accessible for the reader to understand and interpret from a modern perspective whilst also learning about the daily life and culture of a slave in Pompeii during that time period.
The narration was perfect, allowing me to become even more attached to characters or adding to my disgust for others. I would love to hear more of Beamish’s work.

Meh
So I bought this book because it had really good reviews… and I’m so disappointed. The performance was so flat, there was very few places where she had any emotion in her voice. Even then she only spoke a bit louder.
The story it’s self was slow, the characters weren’t well rounded, it was all just very shallow. Even the big event that happens at the end of the book is just flat.
I won’t be purchasing the next book.
