About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Vampires do not exist. Everyone knows this. So it's particularly annoying when they start popping up around Manchester....

Nobody is pleased about it. Not the Founders, the secret organisation for whom vampires were invented as an allegory, nor the Folk, the magical people hidden in plain sight who only want a quiet life. And definitely not the people of Manchester, because there is nothing more irksome than being murdered by an allegory run amok. Somebody needs to sort this out fast before all hell really breaks loose - step forward the staff of The Stranger Times.

It's not like they don't have enough to be dealing with. Assistant editor Hannah has come back from getting messily divorced to discover that someone is trying to kidnap a member of their staff, and while editor Vincent Banecroft would be delighted to see the back of any of his team, he doesn't like people touching his stuff - it's the principle of the thing.

Throw in a precarious plumbing situation, gambling debts, an entirely new way of swearing and a certain detective inspector with what could be kindly referred to as 'a lot of baggage' and it all adds up to another hectic week in the life of the newspaper committed to reporting the truth that nobody else will touch.

This Charming Man is the second book in the critically acclaimed The Stranger Times series.

Fantastic narration

Talented narration; hilarious characters and a plot which veers between Hammer horror creepy and laugh out loud slapstick. Brilliant! Can’t wait for the next

Already excited for the next one!

I loved C. K. McDonnell's other books (Dublin Trilogy and more) so when I heard about Stranger Times, which is the first book in this series,I was so excited that he was venturing into the Urban Fantasy/paranormal arena and I was not disappointed. Stranger Times was so enjoyable and I had high hopes for the sequel, This Charming Man, and I LOVED this book. Even more great characters, incorporating legends, lore and more into the modern day. Brendan McDonald brings the characters voices to life so well, great at accents and I am so looking forward to the next book!

Another great story

Another great story by the author. He has a knack of writing stories that have great characters, entertaining plot lines and are so funny. This is the 2nd book in the series and it meets all of the criteria above, the only negative was when it ended, can't wait for book 3. Have to give credit to the narrator, absolutely brilliant, so much so that at one point I was actually querying was someone else doing one of the women's voices lol, one of the best narrators I've heard.

Did not want it to end!

CK and Brendan are an amazing duo! I was straight into this the day it was released and it was as fun and engaging as The Stranger Times. Story and performance are terrific. More please!

Great second novel in this series

Some wonderful characters including the odious yet strangely loveable...no scratch that....likeable? tolerable?... Banecroft. Proper chuckle-along stuff.

Great fun

I stumbled on this and it’s predecessor, Stranger Times. The story is outlandish and wonderfully ridiculous and the characters are delightfully charming. And the narrator is incredibly skilled at delivering the individual and unique range of voices, some with such similar accents, but you still know who’s talking. I’ll be looking for more audible content from both Mr McDonnell and Mr McDonald.

just brilliant

can't praise this series enough, the blend of storyline and narrator is perfect!
loads of humour but done in a way that doesn't detract from the story, and superb talent of the narrator with a huge range of accents and vocal changes given each character a distinct personality

Go on, you know you want to

Definitely a new favourite author and series for me. It's worth every penny, I purchased book 2 before finishing book 1. You won't be disappointed, I'm off to buy book 3.
