About this listen

The gripping novel by Sunday Times number one best seller Victoria Hislop is set against the backdrop of the German occupation of Greece, the subsequent civil war and a military dictatorship, all of which left deep scars.

Themis is part of a family bitterly divided by politics and, as a young woman, her fury with those who have collaborated with the Nazis drives her to fight for the Communists.

She is eventually imprisoned on the notorious islands of exile, Makronisos and Trikeri, and has to make a life or death decision. She is proud of having fought, but for the rest of her life is haunted by some of her actions. Forty years after the end of the civil war, she finally achieves catharsis.

Victoria Hislop sheds light on the complexity of Greece's traumatic past and weaves it into the dynamic tale of a woman who is both hero and villain, and her lifelong fight for justice.

I was spellbound!

The story line is gripping and the narration very emotive and engaging. It gave me a new appreciation for the layers of Greece's history. I very much recomend this book to anyone who likes a good multi generational family saga and/ or has an interest in Greek history and politics.

Stirring storyline

As usual Victoria Hislop does not disappoint with this beautifully told and moving recollection of a character who lived with passion and commitment through momentous events and heartbreaking tragedy. So reflective of the experiences of those who lives through this time.

Startlingly good

A real tour de force. I have enjoyed all the books by this author but this is my favourite. It’s also extremely interesting about recent Greek history. It’s full of complicated human relationships, I love the way people are not just good or bad but complex characters, as in real life. Thoroughly recommended!

Wonderful story spoilt by Narrator

This enthralling story with so many descriptive details was spoilt by the narrator being too close to the microphone so every breath sometimes laboured was heard .

Started well.

A promising start, with good characters, however the story ended up being like a lesson in Greek history.

great story 😊

Loved the story. Victoria Hislop is a favourite author of mine and this didn't disappoint.
Couldn't stand the nasal reader though 🤷🏻‍♀️

A beautifully written book

After reading The Island I was keen to read more by Victoria Hislop.
Although I didn't feel this book was as good as The Island I did really enjoy it and felt gripped from start to finish.
This book is based on the Greek civil war and the battle for democracy The tale follows a Greek family in the harsh reality of the 1940's and one woman's battle for her beliefs.
Tissues will frequently be needed if you listen ton this book!
The narrative was clear and well read.

Glad to get to end.

Narration made this not as enjoyable and I didn’t really settle to all the different voices, especially the children’s voices. I found the story dragged and towards the end I sped through the chapters. It was an ok story but could have been better if a little shorter.
