Summary
The world as we know it ended, but after a brief 15-year period of rising dead and spreading chaos, things are more or less back to normal. The maps of the world have changed, now including miles-wide Black Zones, and state lines have been redrawn.
In the aftermath, a game show arose: Cemetery Gates, where contestants test their mettle against the walking dead. The winners go on to fortune and fame, and the losers… well, they're taken care of by the next round of contestants. Enter Terry Dax, who uncovers a secret so explosive, Of The Dead, LLC has decreed Dax will die, and he will die on Cemetery Gates!
Things only go downhill from there. Zombies, bounty hunters, pirate-themed gangs, mega-corporations and an entire six-pack of whup-ass. World of Trouble is a zombie/corporate espionage/adventure story, equally inspired by The Running Man, Richard Stark's Parker novels, and Dawn of the Dead.

Breathes New Life into the Zombie Genre
In "Tribulation of Dax," Thom Brannan offers a refreshing take on the zombie genre. The world as we know it has ended, with 15 tumultuous years of rising dead and spreading chaos, yet life has stabilized into a new normal. The geographical and political landscapes have transformed, with the introduction of miles-wide Black Zones and redrawn state lines.
The novel reads like a collection of short stories, following the tribulations of Terrance Dax. From an unwitting contestant in a life-or-death reality game show, where competitors are pursued by the undead, to a corporate saboteur exacting revenge on the corporation that exploited him for entertainment, Dax's journey is exhilarating. The narrative blends zombie horror with cyberpunk elements, featuring Dax hacking at zombies and hacking into servers.
Thom Brannan's writing is beautiful, filled with laugh-out-loud dialogue and nail-biting tension. Although narrator Derek Stephen Brown initially struggles to find the voice for one of the ancillary characters, this is a minor issue in what is an overall strong performance.
Full disclosure: I received a copy of this audiobook from the author, but I can highly recommend it.
