Summary

Karnstein Castle stands like a bird of prey on the highest point of the hills that surround the village below. A huge monolithic reminder to all those who see it of the power of the family who have lived there for centuries. By day the village of Karnstein is a peaceful place, but by night, an unimaginable evil roams free. Villagers are found dead, their throats ripped open and bodies drained of blood. Young girls disappear and are never seen again. Rumour has it that they are taken to the castle for the pleasure of Count Karnstein, the last surviving member of the family.

Shaun Hutson great as always

This is the first Shaun Hutson book I've listen too normally I would read them. He is my favourite author, very descriptive and tells a great story most of the time. This book was simply great and I really enjoyed it

Wonderful adoptation

I remember seeing this old Hammer horror films ago featuring Mary & Madelaine Collinson in the lead roles.

Shaun Hutson's novelization stays pretty much true to the original storyline set in and around Karnstein castle where brotherhood members burn young girls for witchcraft.

The story centres around Freida & Maria (the twins) who move to live with their aunt & uncle following the death of their parents.

Freida soon falls under the spell of the evil Count Karnstein as the story builds to a very good conclusion.

Whoever cast Sean Barrett as narrator certainly has an ear for that sort of thing as the narration of this story is virtually perfect as his voice suits the tale so well.

Great performance from Mr Barrett as per usual

Another great performance from Mr Barrett. He never disappoints and is able to make this somewhat predictable and simple book a more enjoyable experience than it normally would have been.
Well written, but leaves you with few memories

Misleading title

Not wanting to give the story away, however, if you are expecting a plot twist toward the end, there isn't one. Good book nonetheless.
