Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The guns are silent. The dead are not.

1919. On the desolate battlefields of Northern France, the guns of the Great War are silent. Special battalions now face the dangerous task of gathering up the dead for mass burial.

Captain Mackenzie, a survivor of the war, cannot yet bring himself to go home. First he must see that his fallen comrades are recovered and laid to rest. His task is upended when a gruesome discovery is made beneath the ruins of a German strongpoint.

Amy Vanneck's fiancé is one soldier lost amongst many, but she cannot accept that his body may never be found. She heads to France, determined to discover what became of the man she loved.

It soon becomes clear that what Mackenzie has uncovered is a war crime of inhuman savagery. As the dark truth leaches out, both he and Amy are drawn into the hunt for a psychopath, one for whom the atrocity at Two Storm Wood is not an end, but a beginning.

"Gray succeeds in entwining two powerful tales - a love story and a hate story - in a way that, right from the shocking start, is both convincing and enthralling." (Virginia Baily, author of Sunday Times best seller Early One Morning)

A must. Compelling until the very last word

A fantastic story of love, anguish and devotion set in the dreadful events of the First World War. I was riveted until the last ironic word, had it been a book I wouldn’t have put it down.
A must listen excellently narrated.

Graphic believable

Listened to two storm wood as this months book club choice.
It takes you into the depths of war from a number of different angles.
At times the horrific actions can feel a little overwhelming but as the story plays out they become woven into the picture.
I felt it was read very well and as this often impacts on my enjoyment of the book would make it a recommendation within it’s theme.

Magnificent story

I was riveted, so much felt so real. I could not stop listening and the final denouement made the journey so much easier to understand. Great narration. I feel I have a much more human insight into the terrible nightmares experienced in WW1.

Unusual and captivating murder mystery

The novel portrays a real sense of time and place which is enhanced by the excellent narration. If you liked Birdsong, then this is a must read.

A very different murder genre

Enjoyed reading a story set in a very different age to the normal whodunnit offers currently available. Would recommend!

Beautifully narrated…

This story was quite a difficult read because of previously unknown aspects of war. I’ve always been a pacifist, would have been a conscientious objector at the time. This novel confirmed my beliefs.
Interesting but I’d struggle to call it entertaining.
The narrator is perfect and whenever I search for my next audio book I’ll try to discover something more by this narrator.
