About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Stop being a servant of the life you're living and become a creator of the world you want. Electrifying lessons in power, influence and persuasion to equalise women in an unequal world.

Why do so many women feel they're too much yet not enough? How can you feel 'good and mad' yet reluctant to speak up in a meeting or difficult conversation? What causes women to freeze at critical moments?

Kasia Urbaniak spent 17 years studying to become a Taoist nun. To foot the bill for her studies, she worked as a high-paid (and extremely successful) dominatrix in dungeons around New York City. What she learned in these two wildly different settings has turned into her life's work.

Unbound brings Urbaniak's unique teachings for women on speaking power, persuading others and navigating conflict to a mainstream audience for the first time. Part polemic, part practical, it opens women's eyes to why they frequently find it so difficult - personally, professionally and socially - to raise their voices, why they freeze in challenging circumstances and what they can do to change this. Too often women find themselves in the role of 'sub' when they need to be more 'dom' - in short they are paralysed by their Good Girl Syndrome and a deep-seated need to please everyone and anyone except themselves.

Unbound offers precise, practical instruction in how to stand in your power, find your voice and use it well. Part manual, part manifesto, it will help you cut through layers of self-censoring and self-doubt to go after what you truly want, and live your wildest, best and most satisfying life.

Useful and eye opening

I found this interesting, eye opening and helpful for understanding power dynamics in conversation. For instance, I never thought about how many uncomfortable questions I am asked that I feel obligated to answer. My significant other who is a man either never gets asked such questions to begin with or automatically deflects them. The book focuses on honing how women communicate so they can more easily get what they really want from others. Only problem is it often is not women’s conditioning or communication skills that are the main obstacle to them getting what they want or having power. Nevertheless this is a useful book.

genuinely change-making and inspiring

excellent coaching material, really convincing. I found myself (an introvert & conflict avoidant) seeking out situations where I could practice assertiveness or asking for what I wanted, based on the altered perspectives gained in this book. she also has a lovely voice.

Life changing

Honestly this book could be life changing for so many women! Good girl conditioning was so ingrained in me, having experienced the consequences of 'the freeze', this book has given me so many practical tools to speak up in a powerful way.
Definitely not just another one of those self help book.

The ultimate guide to female empowerment. Read it!

This book took my breath away! Kasia Urbaniak made me look at power in a new and completely different way. "Unbound" is the ultimate guide to female empowerment that acknowledges all the systemic misogyny women face daily but doesn't slide into the lazy and predictable "all men are horrible and everything to do to with men sucks" territory. Instead, the author shows us how to become powerful, confident and strong by accepting accountability for our empowerment and working hard on ourselves.
I'll be buying this book for all the women I love.
Thank you, Kasia!
